hi everybody, My name is MAdlena. In 2 weeks I m going to London for 10 days. I know places to visit, but they are well-known. If anyone could help me with discovering other, not very popular places, which i can visit thanks a lot!!!
It depends what you like doing, but the street markets are good and can take you into some parts of london off the tourist trail. I suggest: - brick lane market, in the east end - sells everyting you can think of, interesting mix of local cockneys, asians and other nationalities, also in an interesting street, on sunday mornings; - portobello road, also sunday mornings - antiques and bric a brac; - caledonia road flower market; - camden market - very trendy, funky young stuff, retro gear, small scale designers, good eateries and bars nearby -greenwich craft market. covent garden area is good for shopping, eating and buskers, although it is touristy it's still good. for multicultural london check out untoldlondondotorg. for listings get timeout mag in london or timeout site online. Also london has some wonderful modern architecture e.g. 'the gherkin (!!)' well worth seeking out. If you like parks st james' park is great, check out hyde park for 'speakers corner' for all the daft people who gather there to publicly speak on any subject whatsoever, also kew gargens are wonderful. Chinatown is a fascinating area too for its chinese and oriental population - lots of interesting shops and great restaurants for fab dim sum - as is old compton street area next door which is the 'gay' area, and soho in general (if u go to soho DO NOT go to the hostess bars unless you want to get severely ripped off!!) The museums are very good, and the tate modern gallery is always excellent. Definately try to get off the tourist trail as much as possible. london is a vibrant and diverse city with so much going on if you look you will be amazed! As in any city, keep an eye on your purse and camera. The underground is safe and a great way to get around, but is very crowded at commuting times. Be more careful at nighttime. There are lots of good websites for london - look out for 'underground' or alternative sites. Have a great time! Let us know what you get up to! Selkie1
