Vikings Festival in Wolin 5-7 August 2005

Hello.
Once I've heard that annually in Wolin is organised the Vikings Festival. I found out that this year it will take place 5-7 August. Could someone please tell me more about it? Is it worth a visit?

    "THIS WAY WE WERE BEING DESCRIBED. CHRONICLES, CHRONICLES..."

    PROGRAMME:

    FRIDAY 5.08.2005 THE DAY OF THE EASTERN CULTURE 11.00 - March of participants, opening ceremony and presentation of groups and ships. Each year, the beginning point is the march of all the participants. It starts at the foot of St.Nicholas Church and through the market square of Wolin it conducts on the island to begin the XIth Slavs & Vikings' Festival solemnly. The groups will be presented and the captains will tell about their ships. The marche will be accompanied by the music - dancing groups from different European countries.
    12.00 - 18.00 Presentation of early medieval handicrafts, cooking and the Slavs and Viking's camp. All the craftsmen who came to the Festival will show their early medieval professions. Not only can it be seen how in the old ages the pots were moulded but also the replic can be done by oneself. Other presentations: weaving, production of the buckets made of bark, jeweller's craft, workshop of amber, wood - carving, workshop of antlers and horns, tanning, basketry, coin extracting, flour - milling, smelting, box - sewing, salt obtaining, stained - glass production etc.
    12.00 - 18.00 Early mediaeval playground and competitions for children. All children can take part in these competitions and workcrafts accordingly to their age. Throwing metal rings, grinding grains on chanelled hand - mill, fight on balance, shooting with a bow to a cabbage, moulding pots, running in sacks and others. Those plays will be combined with competitions. The new element is puppet theatre based on the early medieval descriptions.
    12.00 - Race of the Viking and Slavic ships. The replicas of early medieval ships will be the permanent element of the Festival.
    12.30 - Performance of the music group JAVARYNA accompanied by STARY OLSA. These two groups from Belarus will do dancing workshops for visitors and participants of the Festival, organised at the early medieval music. During the Xth edition of Festival this point was very succesful among tourists and participants. Moreover, the dancers didn't have to pull the volunteers out of the crowd because legs wanted to dance itself.
    13.00 - Presentation of the king St. Stefan's attendance - hungarian XIth century ruler. Hungarian group OSKULTURA ALAPITVANY will present the march of guard and companions consisted of fifty people. Attendance will be honoured by hungarian group playing military music. BESTE BANDA using drums and bagpipes. The show will be reported by the narrator (in polish language) who will tell not only about the tradition and hungarian culture but also about the relation and historical relationship of the Hungarians with the Vikings and Waregs. Last of all, the group of 30 archers wil present the traditional hungarian archery.
    13.30 - Performance of the music group. The performance of the music group will be accompanying warriors to the great battle. It will be a perfect moment to look carefully at the different kinds of weapon and early medieval warriors' clothes because later, in the battle dust it can be difficult to notice.
    14.00 - The battle of Slavs and Vikings. On the battle field, there will be fights between two camps of warriors. The number of fighting warriors will be about 400 people. Braver and more trained army will defeat weaker and the result won't be known up to the last warrior.
    15.00 - The performance of the music group.
    15.30 - Archers tournament. Open tournament for visitors and participants.
    16.00 - Staging of the events written in Great Rus chronicles. The show is prepared by the SILVER WOLF group from Russia. It is based on early medieval descriptions.
    17.00 - Waregs' fighting style show. The group of warriors from Russia, Moldava and Ukraine called Waregs will present eastern fighting style and the battle formation.
    17.30 - Performance of the dancing group JAVARYNA accompanied by the music of STARY OLSA.
    17.30 - Competitions of skilful Slavs and Vikings. Open competition for visitors and participants; individual and group disciplines:
    - stake throwing
    - run with tied legs
    - rope pulling
    - hammering nails
    - turn
    - drinking beer in time
    - carrying the "injured fighter"
    - fighting on a balance
    18.00 - Eliminations to the tournament of individual fights - Jarl of Jomsborg's prize. Each group can enter only 2 candidates. The tournament is only for the participants but its aim is also to show the fighting style.
    19.00 - The ceremony of fire. Starting the fire with a fire drill presented by the group from Belarus.
    19.30 - Performance of the music group. 20.00 - 24.00- Performance of the music group.

    SATURDAY 6.08.2005 THE DAY OF POLISH AND SLAVONIC CULTURE
    The staging programme of the events from chronicles is prepsred by JANO (Michał Bogacki) from Poznań. In these undertaking of the polish and slavonic culture day will take part: Kruki from Inowrocław, Wataha Wilcze Kły from Poznań, Krak from Kraków and Elag Nord from Gdańsk. This day there will be the first scientific session on doing research on history of Baltic Sea People 'Wolin - Jomsborg - Vineta'. The leading thought is: sources to history of Baltic Sea People. The session will be organised together with Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań, local authorities and the association of the Centre of Slavs and Vikings 'Wolin - Jomsborg - Vineta'.

    10.30 - The reconstruction of the battle between Wolinians and Wichman with Mieszko I which took place in 967. The show is based on the relations of Windukind of Korbei 'Saxonic history in 3 volumes'.
    11.30 - Sea battle. All the replicas will take part in this undertaking. It will be a bloody battle but the fight will be hot.

    12.00 - Performance of the music group.
    12.30 - Competitions of skilful Slavs and Vikings.
    Open competition for visitors and participants; individual and group disciplines:
    - stake throwing
    - run with tied legs
    - rope pulling
    - hammering nails
    - turn
    - drinking beer in time
    - carrying the "injured fighter"
    - fighting on a balance
    13.00 - Competition for the historical costume. It will be the only competition during the whole Festival reserved particularly for the participants. However, this event will be a kind of show and presentation of clothes from early middle ages. The participants taking part in this competition will have to tell about the elements of their costumes - describe which archeological discoveries they are based on - whether they are replicas of the originals or stylizations of the things from that time.
    13.30 - Performance of the music group. The performance of the music group will be accompanying warriors to the great battle. It will be a perfect moment to look carefully at the different kinds of weapon and early medieval warriors' clothes because later, in the battle dust it can be difficult to notice.
    14.00 - The battle of Slavs and Vikings. On the battle field, there will be fights between two camps of warriors. The number of fighting warriors will be about 400 people. Braver and more trained army will defeat weaker and the result won't be known up to the last warrior.
    15.00 - Staging of ceremony of divination with horse. The presentation is based on Helmold's chronicle
    15.30 - Competition for telling the viking saga or slavonic legend. Each group can prepare a chosing myth as a short play. The way of performing is unrestricted: poem, prose, pantomime. The participants will be told about this competition earlier.
    16.30 - Tournament of individual fights - Jarl of Jomsborg's prize. The end of the tournament and handing the prize to the winner.
    17.30 - Staging entitled: 'Legendary beginnings of PIAST DYNASTY'. The play is based on polish chronicle by Gall Anonim.
    18.30 - Performance of the music group JAVARYNA accompanied by STARY OLSA.
    19.00 - The final of the the competition for national cuisine. During the whole day the participants will be given ingredients. Invention and ingeniousness art of cooking are taking into consideration (best of all if the recipe will have its roots in the Middle Ages). Chosen people out of the visitors will be the jury.
    19.30 Slavonic wedding ceremony and performances of the music groups. It will be the third wedding in tradition of the Festival. The ceremony is based on historical descriptions.
    20.00 - 24.00- Performance of the music group.
    24.00 Show of fireworks.

    SUNDAY 7.08.2005

    10.30 - The end of the competition for the silver needle. In the first morning of the festival people who want to take part in this competition ( not only women ) will be given materials to do an embroidery. The patterns will be coming from Bayeaux tapestry, which is the best known tapestry in the history of Western Europe culture. The scenes embroided on it, tell about Willhelm the Conqueror's life and the conquests. On Sunday all the works will be collected and judged.
    11.00 - The race of Viking and Slavonic ships. The replicas of early medieval ships are the permanent element of the Festival. This year we will be entertaining seven replicas.
    12.00 - The performance of the music group.
    12.00 - Competitions of skilful Slavs and Vikings. Open competition for visitors and participants; individual and group disciplines:

    - carrying the "injured fighter"

    12.30 - Producing the birch tar - final stage. The wandering wood - distillers from Berlin during the whole Festival will be presenting the process of producing the birch tar, tar and charcoal based on the technology of combined pots coming from early Middle Ages.
    13.00 - Competition for the most dignified viking beard. It is open competition for the participants and the tourists. Length, colour, coiffure and other beard's decorations are judged. The jury will consist of the ladies visiting the Festival.
    13.30 - The performance of danish group. The performance of the music group will be accompanying warriors to the great battle. It will be a perfect moment to look carefully at the different kinds of weapon and early medieval warriors' clothes because later, in the battle dust it can be difficult to notice.
    14.00 - The battle of Slavs and Vikings. On the battle field, there will be fights between two camps of warriors. The number of fighting warriors will be about 400 people. Braver and more trained army will defeat weaker and the result won't be known up to the last warrior.
    15.00 - The performance of the music group.
    15.30 - Staging of the events based on early medieval descriptions. The group of historical reconstructions from the Skansen Museum of Torgelow will present burial ceremony of the great leader from before 1000 years.
    16.00 - The performance of the music group.
    17.00 - The show of the vikings fighting style. The group of warriors will present the western type of fighting.
    17.30 - Open competition for the historical tatoo. Each visitor or participant can take part in this competition, present own tatoo and compete for the best likeness linking to the early medieval patterns.
    18.00 - The formal ending ceremony of the XIth Vikings and Slavs' Festival.

    I was at this Slavs and Vikings' Festival a few years ago. This year it will be organised for eleventh time in Wolin. I think it's wotrh a visit. Wolin is located about 70km from Szczecin and only 20 km from Swinoujscie and 10km from the Baltic coast.
