Hi there, I want to do a day trip to Whitby from York next Sunday, I don't have my own vehicle, what is the easiest/quickest way to get there? Train to Scarborough then bus to Whitby, or bus all the way? They don't seem to be that frequent on Sundays and have to change in Marlton? Any help much appreciated:-)
No UK buses are frequent on Sundays (except in London, perhaps), and that includes the Scarborough > Whitby bus (93/X93). Put 'whitby' into the search box on http://www.northyorkstravel.info and you'll get all the relevant timetables in PDF (including the 'coastliner'). The 840/X40 Leeds>Whitby route (via York) does require a change of bus at Malton sometimes. Whether you decide to take the train/bus or just the bus will depend on your preferred timings: it's a matter of working out from the timetables which will give you the longest time in Whitby. Visiting on a weekday or Saturday would be even easier! :-)
