getting to whitby by train from london

by thewriter Online Now Jan 15, 2007 at 11:43 AM

My friend and I are coming to Whitby in early June. What is the cheapest way of getting to Whitby by train? Some of the trains I've looked at have scary prices...

train fares are very complicated. its sometimes cheaper to split the jorney. certainly dont set off early in the morning. prices can very greatly from route to route.
coach would be cheaper. youmight have to go to scarborough and take local bus.

whitby is lovely by the way

www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you all the train times and fares. Some prices will be very high (train travel isn't cheap in the UK), but it depends on when you are travelling. Cheapest return seems to be 90GBP, taking around 4 and a half hours. www.thetrainline.com is an alternative site.

Coaches take much, much longer but are also much cheaper. www.nationalexpress.com for times and fares (from 36GBP return; takes around 8 hours).

Or try to find either a cheap train OR a National Express coach to York and from there, catch the www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk.

Spectacular ride across the North York Moors national park and that should be less expensive than a train all the way to Whitby with a change in Middlesborough as that is a bit of a geographical detour.

It may be a bit long winded but Hull Trains do some good offers from London. You would go London to Hull, local train to Scarborough and then bus Scarborough to Whitby. Wonderful own - well worth the journey.

National Express very cheap.Dont imagine the train to be much faster things go wrong. If you come by bus choose midweek to travel, the road traffic is much better.
