    • Information about Way Kambas or Krakatau

      Sumatra Apr 27, 2013 at 9:34 PM

I have been living in Bengkulu for over half a year now and it is about time for me to go back to the States, but before I leave my friend wants to take me on a short trip here in Indonesia. I have been really interested in going to Way Kambas park to try and see some of the animals there but recently I have also been interested in seeing Anak Krakatau. If I was in Lampung province for 4 or 5 days would it be possible to see both?
Does anyone know of someone who could help us get from Way Kambas to Krakatau or just help us with planning a trip in that area? I am very open to suggestions.

      Yogyakarta May 8, 2013 at 7:46 AM

      Hi

We are a couple who are going to Yogyakarta to study for a semester, from September to February this year. Do any of you have any recommendations regarding places to live? Price isn't really a big issue, as Indonesia is cheap in comparison to our home country. We were looking at this place tigalima.wordpress.com/room-... (the Room Deluxe), but they were full.

Would be nice if it wasn't too far from UGM :)

      Thanks in advance!

2 mths stay for health, healing, rejuvenation and to feed my artistic soul

      Ubud May 11, 2013 at 3:57 AM

I was recently recommend UBUD as a destination to consider for time out to recover my health, and reignite my spirit, emotionally, physically and artistically. I am single, a photographer / graphic designer and seek a safe place to call home for 2 mths.
On my wish list is the following:

      • A quaint place to stay, picturesque, lush, and quiet ( budget $50 per night)
      • Air con & a good swimming pool that I can exercise in.
      • Easily accessible to markets, cafes, town - as I cant walk distances due to an injured foot. Though I have heard its easy to get around by public transport
      • Would like to also engage in art workshops - and even cooking ones would be great too
      • Affordable daily massages
      • Sound baths or similar if they exist
      • Gentle exercise classes
      • Open to other forms of healing...

Advise given to me was to find a nice place to stay and then go and visit a place called the Yoga Barn as from there I could find many opportunities for health / healing networking and so forth etc.

Does anyone have any tips for art workshops of any kind? A central place like the Yoga Barn maybe and a website perhaps etc.

Are their any forums one can use to network - maybe to find other people in Ubud where one can share interests - ie photography, or just hook up for coffee etc.

I am planning to go Sept / October
I am not a beach or bar person. More inclined to seek peaceful environs....

      Many thanks in anticipation.
P.S. I am in my 40's so I would like some comforts but it doesn't have to be extravagant. Gone are the days of backpacking :)

    • Family Travel - Itinerary & Timing Questions

North Sumatra Province Apr 23, 2013 at 6:57 PM

We are a family of four (two older teens) who are interested in going to Sumatra. We have about 16 days (including travel to/from Australia) and were considering flying in Medan, seeing orangutans in Bukit Lawang and possibly trekking a bit there (son is very fit; us not as much!) or possibly saving trekking to do so with elephants in Tangkahan, which sounds amazing. We also want to fit in Lake Toba and a 5+ day beach holiday at the end. We are wondering for the beach part if we should then go up to Banda Ache and on to Pulau Weh (is there snorkelling there as well as diving and is there anything for the kids to do if they get sick of relaxing?) or fly to Padang at go to cubadak paradisovillage where there seems to be diving and snorkelling. As I write all this, I think it sounds ambitious for two weeks, so would like advice about what the best options are. We've been diving/snorkelling in Bunaken, Komodo/Flores and Barrier Reef so wonder how marine life around Sumatra compares. Also visited orangutans in Kalimantan via river boat. We are hoping that Sumatra will be different to those trips to add to our love of Indonesia and our view of how diverse the country is. Thank you for any advice you can provide!

      July 2013

      Indonesia Apr 21, 2013 at 9:10 AM

I am in the earliest stages of planning 30 days in Indonesia for this coming July 2013. Can anyone offer some tips on building an itinerary?
We are a 50-year-old couple. Very active, love historic sites, cultural experiences, geographic marvels, beautiful beaches.
Do not desire party-hearty atmosphere, a high percentage of city time, or un-needed luxury.
I looked into the possibility of joining an Explore or Intrepid tour for first 14 days and then the last 16 days independent but dates don't work out for that. Neither of us has been to any part of Asia before though both have extensive travel experience.
Can some of the Indonesia experts toss in some suggestions? Of course, I'm reading extensively the Indonesia pages here on VT but would love to hear from you as this strategy has never failed to open up our world beyond our individual abilities.
      Thanks, Lynn and Will

    • travel distance to airport BIL

      Lombok May 24, 2012 at 5:43 AM

Hi, I planned to stay two nights at Lombok in between Gili Air and the plain to Jakarta (back home). Since I didn't know about the new located airport I would stay somewhere around Senggigi. Easy and nearby travelling from the Gili's and to the airport (Mataram). Maybe it's better to find a new -even nicer place- to stay. How long is it travelling from the coast (near the gilis) to Kuta? In a decent way. Or should we still go for the Senggigi option. We are a family of 3 (daugther 13) and we like to have some relaxed last holiday days, and in a kind of luxury accomodation with a ver¥ nice beach and if possible a pool. Every suggestion is welcome thanks Patty

Travel from Lombok to Bali (How?)

      Lombok Jan 15, 2012 at 12:55 AM

Here are what I gathered: 1. local ferry: cheap but takes 4-5 hours with possibility of overloading? 2. fast ferry: takes 2 hours but cost USD65 from an agent 3. flight: half an hour price around USD40 If what I gathered is correct, I am more keen on taking the flight. Here are some domestic flights: Lion air: Guess this one is the best but flight time doesn't fit my schedule Wings air: google it but keeps linking to Lion air website? TRANS NUSA AIR & BATAVIA: not sure if reliable? Could VTers give me some recommendation/more information? Thanks.

      Bali Vs Lombok

      Lombok Oct 20, 2010 at 6:30 AM

Hi there all, Thanks to some great advice from members on this forum I have decided on heading to Indonesia for 3 weeks next August for my Honeymoon. I am looking for an idea of where to go what to see etc - I know there are lots of guide books but I always prefer advice from people who have actually experienced what they are talking about. Most important - what Island ....... there are only 17500 to choose from although I have seemed to narrow it down between Bali and Lombock So basically what we want to do when we get there is Spend a week in a beautiful tranquil beach location where we can relax but also perhaps take some surfing lessons or wind surfing etc scuba dive etc and of course some privacy. Then after 2 weeks having a tradtional back packing holiday - temples, enjoying the bali culture, food, trekking and perhaps Island hopping, perhaps visit a neighbouring island or staying in a couple of different places. Although its a honeymoon we both prefer holidays where we can see and do as much as possible so although were want a week of relaxation, we really want to have as diverse and varied experience of Indonesia as possible. All suggestions and advice will be greatly recieved. (the wilder the better) :)

I am worried if we get a late afternoon flight and it is cancelled, then we cant get there until next day. Alternatively there is an 8.00am with Indosesian Transport. Lombok Mar 28, 2008 at 10:35 AM

Hi there, I am Lee, a new member from London and thanks for reading my post! I am visiting Lombok in July for the first part of my journey before Bali and plan to spend 9 nights in Lombok. My plan is: 1) 3 nights in the south in the Novotel Lombok (managed to negotiate by phone a pool villa for US$190 nett with breakfast for two!) 2) 3 nights in Gili Meno in the Villa Nautilus 3) 3 nights in the Sheraton Senggigi I have seen so many beautiful pictures of the south coast and would love to spend 3 full days with a driver and car exploring places east and west of Kuta - I am not a surfer but just like to see lots of nice scenery and snorkel. Is it enough? I am having problem deciding whether I should stay for 2 nights in Gili Meno and 4 nights in Senggigi instead? Is 3 nights enough for some exploration of the north of the island iwth a driver and car as I will not be doing any mountain climbing at Mount Rinjani? The thing is I am afraid 2 nights in beautiful Gili Meno is not enough - please advise? Lastly, is there any driver with a good car that anyone has used that can be recommended and what are the rates I should expect to pay either in the Kuta Novotel region or in Senggigi? Many thanks in advance! Lee

Info needed, please, for 2 weeks in Lombok

      Lombok Nov 3, 2007 at 6:55 AM

We ( my husband & I)are planning to spend next February in Indonesia , 2 weeks visiting his family in Jakarta and the other 2 weeks on holiday somewhere. We have been to Bali previously and didn't think much of it. Kuta is my idea of hell! So this time we thought we'd try Lombok. Does anyone know if Indonesian nationals get a discounted rate for hotel rooms and if so, what's the best way to book? Can anyone reccommend a hotel in Senggigi? We were thinking about the Sheraton, has anyone stayed there and whats the beach like? I want somewhere thats good for swimming so I can overcome my fear of snorkeling!! We also thought about spending 1 week on one of the gillis, so any suggestions please? Whats the weather like there in February? Whats the best way to get to Lombok from Jakarta, and what are the fares like? Sorry for so many questions, but after the Bali trip which was such a dissapointment, I want to get this holiday right and arrange most of it myself(instead of leaving it to my in-laws).

Hi all! I'm looking for an affordable accomodation in Kuta from september 10th for a few days. I already checked Mimpi Manis, but they are full during this time. Is there any other place you can recommend me? I don't mind to have cold water only! I don't want to go to a hotel, I prefer to be at a more personal place where I have the chance to talk to the people! Thanks a lot for your help! Regards, Sibylle

      Diving - any recommendations?

      Lombok Jul 16, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Hi all! I do have some more questions: I will be doing my PADI Rescue Diver during my time in Lombok. I therefore now found several dive shops, some on Gili air and one on Gili Trawangan. Can you recommend me, where it would be better to go to? Do you have any recommendations about dive shops?? Thanks a lot! Sibylle
