Nuremberg Xmas Market and Beginner Sking

      Bavaria Sep 30, 2015 at 6:58 AM

Greetings forum. We are planning to go to Nuremberg to experience the Xmas market from around Dec 16th. 3 kids ages 8, 10 and 13. My questions are:
      (a) I have the options of direct flights to Munich, Frankfurt or Berlin. From the map it looks like Munich or Frankfurt might be the closet to then get to Nuremberg. Please advise which will be the best airport to fly into out of the 3 options for onward fastest/efficient transportation to Nuremberg - taxi or rail.

      (b) After 3 days of the market which we think should be enough, we are thinking of combining this with a "learn to ski" vacation. Is there any recommendations nearby Nuremberg that might work esp in Dec month? I have heard of persons combining Nuremberg market with sking in Austria so not sure if learn to ski options are available in environs. Recommendations on Austria welcome as well if better.

How does one get to the river boat dock "hafenstrasse, anliegestelle fur Kabinenschiffe" from the central bus/train station or Bahnhofstratte street? Is there a bus line that takes you close to the docking area.

      Halloween, Allerheiligen, Allerseelen

      Land Baden-Württemberg Sep 18, 2015 at 4:15 AM

I will be in Freiburg 30th Oct - 2nd Nov. I've just realised that this covers Halloween, All Saints and All Souls Day. I suspect (to be honest, I hope) that Badners don't celebrate Halloween in the same tacky(!) way as the USA and latterly the UK. In fact, isn't the Germans' use of 'Halloween' Denglish? What was wrong with 'Vorabend vom Allerheiligenfest'?! Question: On Nov 1 and Nov 2 do any traditional events relating to Allerheiligen and Allerseelen take place in Südbaden? Would need to be accessible by train or bus from Freiburg.

    • Stag Weekend questions

      Munich Sep 13, 2015 at 4:57 AM

I’m going with a group of 20 males to Munich next month on a stag (after Oktoberfest ends) and have been reading it’s tough with bouncers and stuff there which is annoying but what can you do, we will try our best. The rough plan is touristy beer halls evening and then Schwabing one night, Haidhausen the other night and probably Kultfabrik late probably both nights… does these sound feisable with the size group we are?

We won’t be dressing in stupid outfits or anything, we’re all aged between 30 – 34 and won’t be walking up to doors in a huge group or anything.

Also a couple of other questions if any helpful sorts out there might know –

Where would be the hottest curry restaurant in Munich? I want atomic levels of spice if possible, ghost chili curry sort of thing.

Is there any hope whatsoever of getting tickets to Bayern Munich v Koln FC around the grounds on the day for a reasonable price (unlikely I know)

We’re into music-wise, rock n roll, rock, indie, Britpop sort of stuff, are there any particular bars, pubs, clubs we should aim for, or is it all just electro dance stuff?

I’m trying also to find an obese stripper for the stag, like the fatter the better, they call them blubbergrams in Ireland and roly-poly strippers in the UK, for an idea of what I’m on about,  is there anyone or anywhere I could contact to book this for the stag? All I can find is regular strippers but that won’t do..

      Thanks for any guidance!

      Stop enroute

      Donauwörth Sep 12, 2015 at 10:05 AM

We plan to be traveling by train from Nördlingen to Augsburg next spring. There is a transfer point at Donauwörth, which appears to be a pretty nice town for a visit. I was thinking of a 3 hour stop just to get a quick look at the town. Does anyone know if there are luggage lockers at the train station? Is there any reason why this would not be a reasonable plan? Thanks for any help. Gary

Not too noisy German restaurant for a Friday evening

      Cologne Sep 26, 2015 at 2:00 PM

Can anyone recommend a not too noisy German restaurant in Cologne's city centre/old town for a small VT meeting.
Most of the typical brewing houses get quite noisy on a Friday evening, so that a good talk isn't possible anymore.

I have been for a quiet a few times to this place:

which is nice when one can sit outside in the courtyard, but as the interior is quite small it gets very noisy in there.

      So all recommendations are welcome.

If possible, please suggest a reliable local tour supplier or a reliable private transfer company to contact.

    • Garmisch-Partenkirchen area location to stay?

      Garmisch-Partenkirchen Sep 19, 2015 at 2:03 PM

      Hi GaPa experts,
Please recommend me location to stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen area. I just spent couple of hours searching for the answer, but there are so many conflicting opinions! We are two couples – no kids, will have a rental car and planning to stay for 5 nights in this area, probably rent a house/apartment. What town would you recommend to stay? We’d like to drive around, visit couple of castles, enjoy scenery, go for 2-3 hour hikes, etc. At night we’d like to go out (would be nice within walking distance) and have at least some selection of restaurants/bars.
      Thanks a lot in advance!

      taxi in weimar

by agathi Online Now Jul 31, 2015 at 6:44 AM

One more question. There are some taxi companies that give their address (sth like offices) and can be spotted at the google maps. If we are in the area, can we go there and take a taxi or do they work differently?
eg.We will be at the Villa Haar at Ilm Park and we would like to take a taxi. There is a "Taxi Bohme" at Dichterweg street. Can we just go there and take a taxi?

      walking in a park

by agathi Online Now Jul 31, 2015 at 6:28 AM

Hallo. We would like to visit the park by Ilm and I was wondering, as I have done for other parks as well, what happens if you want make a short cut and walk a few meters onr the grass? I know of course that there are paths to follow, scheduled for walking. Here in Greece we don't have such big parks and to be honest I don't think we would stick to the rule of walking only on the paths if it would be for just some meters in order to avoid making a whole circle. But, of course one should be restricted and thus pls give me some hint.

Is there a bi-weekly or weekly fresh market? How easy is the local transit system for Americans? Is this a local bus system. We plan to have no car, and passes for long distance trains are pricey for this many people. Is there enough to keep us occupied for a month in town? We LOVE history. Are there day-trip tours of any kind based out of Weimar? Is there a place to rent bikes?

Is the Herder House listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites the same thing as the Kirms-Krackow-Haus? Anybody know? And is the Old High School they mention different from the Civil School? I'm confused.

some questions on Weimar and Germany in general

by Graceful Online Now Jul 31, 2005 at 7:22 PM

HI! i will be in weinmar taking an intensive german course in august. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some things:

How do germans usually dress? is it more casual or elegant, and what would a university student wear? In Italy, most university students do not wear shorts, even if the weather is over 30+ degrees (although this year i saw exceptions) and are generally conservative. I've been told that Germans are generally more casual, but maybe in an academic setting its different?

Are prepaid SIM cards for phones as easy to get and Inexpensive in Germany as they are in Italy (ie 5 euro for a sim card with 5 euro of traffic)? Do i need anything other than an ID?

Are coin laundry services common in Germany? I have not recieved a response from the university about what is(n't) available in the student dormitories, so i was wondering if hours of hand washing my clothes is in my future...

Lastly, does anyone know if there is a Deutsch Bank in Weinmar (and where is it)?

Thanks for the help... possibly more questions to come!
