Food is good too!! We will be there at the end of September for 4 days and won't have a car. We will be flying in from Orlando and then training to New York at the end of the stay.

I am suggesting that you stop at Hotel Rouge (www.rougehotel.com). It is near Dupont Circle, at Scott Circle. The neighborhood is much like Dupont Circle, being largely residential, giving the feel of being at home. The Metro is close by at Dupont Circle. It is a wonderful hotel, with large rooms and a fun theme: rouge everywhere. Unless the breakfast has improved and dropped in price, I would suggest that you skip that meal at the hotel and walk around the corner to P Street, where you will find several very good cafes and even a Whole Foods. That is what we did. If your visit spans a weekend, you can pick up fresh Fall fruits, etc. at the Farmer’s Market at Dupont Circle. The hotel’s location is within a comfortable walking distance to the White House and other DC sights. Several embassies are in the area too; the Embassy of Kazakhstan is just down the street with a most interesting sculpture on its front lawn. For an excellent restaurant try Restaurant Nora (www.noras.com). It is one of our favorites in the nation’s capital.

I lived in Chevy Chase, MD, just on the other side of the District line for years and during that time both Dupont Circle and Georgetown were my stomping grounds. I love both areas. I think, however, if I were to go there as a tourist, I would choose Dupont Circle. It is more convenient with the metro being right there as well as several buses lines, plus you can walk to so many places. It's also a very charming area. There are lots of restaurants near there, including Restaurant Nora, already mentioned. The Phillips Collection, a wonderful private art gallery, is just off of Massachusetts Ave and a few blocks from Connecticut. http://www.phillipscollection.org/

I'm partial to Georgetown but no Metro (subway) near by. If you stay in Foggy Bottom (near the State Dept.) you will be inbetween Georgetown and the White house. Maybe stay at the "Watergate" , there is also a Johnson &Johnson near by as I seem to recall. Go eat at "Clyde's" in Georgetown. They have a killer Chili Omelett. Not on the Menu BUT they were very famous for it and use to CAN the chili and ship to die hard fans. You can still order it. Also has great lunch menu. In Georgetown there is a Holiday inn and also a Four Seasons.

Clydes is great. I remember going there when it first opened in the 60's. A friend of mine was dating one of the waiters, a Georgetown University student. He later became her husband and X husband. He's now the owner of the whole corporation which includes the 1789, The Tombs, and the Old Ebbits Grill near the White House.

In the early 80's I think I ate hundreds of pizzas and beer there in the evening after classes. What a great place also.

Were you at Georgetown student? My former husband, a generation behind you, was a student there and his cousin was a history professor until he had a stroke.

Yes. I Got my M.A. there in 83. Was also Graduate Student Body President. The Tombs was our pizza and beer place 1 or 2 evenings a week after Dr, Brian Lattels Graduste Class. BL, myself and others would go there and fix the world. I love DC.

I've just stayed at the Key Bridge Marriott ($175/night) in Alexandria, Virginia, at the foot of the Key Bridge, right across from Georgetown. Quiet, views of rowing teams on the Potomac, and100/night cheaper than the Rouge Hotel. Great service, too; I left some personal items there, and they mailed them back to me! A ten minute walk brings you right into Georgetown. The Rosslyn Metro station is 10 minutes away. Quick cab ride from Union Station.

Although it is not in the center of things, Rosslyn is a good location because there is a metro stop right there and, as you said, it's a short walk to Georgetown. You get a nice view of Washington from there. Rosslyn is, however, not in Alexandria, but in Arlington. Speaking of Alexandria, although I am not recommending it as a place to stay because it's too far out of the way, Old Town Alexandria is very charming and it would probably be worth it to take a trip out there for lunch and a walk around. It's very Americana. John, too bad you wont be able to come to our mini meet on Saturday. RichRich will be there as will Pedro and Cecile. We'll be thinking of you.

Hi! Last time we were in DC we stayed at the Westin Georgetown. We did not have a car either. It was close to a metro station to utilize public transit, and also very close to Georgetown (short 5-10 min walk). Georgetown had tons of restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The hotel was newer, modern amenities and was clean. Also a trader joes a block away if you wanted to go buy some snacks.

The U street neighborhood (around 14th and U) is a little grittier than Dupont, more "hip" and up and coming. Georgetown is very preppy and expensive, but beautiful. Chinatown/Penn Quarter is quite lively as well. Those are your best bets for food and the sights!
