Traveling from Raleigh NC to Washington DC - How Do I Avoid High Traffic Times?

I am traveling from Raleigh NC to DC on Friday (that's about a 5 hour drive, normally). I wish to avoid peak traffic times bet. Richmond and DC. I anticipate stopping to get some dinner around 5-6p and checking my son into his dorm between 6p -10p. Would it be better to leave first thing Friday morning or later in the day? What would be a good place to eat dinner along the route?
