Help with staying in and around Waiuku, near Auckland

by uktxgirl Online Now Mar 15, 2010 at 7:23 AM

My husband and I are attending a wedding at the Castaways Resort near Waiuku in April. In the lead up to the wedding, we are looking for accommodation in or near Waiuku. The only motel we can find has horrible reviews, so we are wondering how far Auckland is from Waiuku, as there are a lot more options there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

it looks like it is a fairish way - depends how far you want to drive

    Pukekohe seems reasonably close

there are a few places in Pukekohe to have a look at, but some of them don't look very flash either

Thank you for the quick reply. Per your advice, I found the Touchwood Motor Lodge in Pukekohe which is within our price range and has great reviews. We are basically looking for cleanliness, comfortable beds, cleanliness, laundry and kitchen facilities and did I mention cleanliness?! We don't plan to spend time in the room except for sleeping and breakfast but when one reviewer of the Waiuku motel mentioned roaches and leftover food that was enough to rule that one out!

on the map it looks to me as if Pukekohe is maybe 30 k from Waiuku - but i am not a great map reader

did you find out how far it is?

i suppose you will have a car and someone will be the designated driver

Oh great - 20 km is definitely okay - that's 12.40 miles to us, so about 15 - 25 minutes depending on roads and speed limits.

    good one then

i see Pukekohe is actually part of greater auckland - but the map i got said Auckland was 63 k away - i suppose they mean the CBD

i just wondered why you weren't staying at castaways - too expensive?

there is a motor camp in waiku but no pics so too much of a risk

in NZ motor camps sometimes have lodges or cabins for reasonable prices which are ok

We are staying at Castaways for 3 nights, but it's a little too expensive for more - we'll be in the area for a total of 8 nights. Planning to visit Rotorua, Tongariro National Park and the caves at Waitomo, so we'll probably stay 1 night in Rotorua and 1 night in the Tongariro area, then see the caves on our way back to the Auckland area.
