      Rough Route Any Help Please!

Sri Lanka Jul 3, 2014 at 12:22 PM

I'm hoping someone out there might be able to point me in the right direction and Help me. I'm going to Sri lanka for 17 Nights, Arriving on the 1st of September. I’m 26 travelling on my own. Therefore I'm honestly a bundle of nerves but it’s something I really want and need to do for myself.

Knowing Nothing about Sri lanka. I bought A Lonely Planet Guide book. I've read a fair bit about certain places besides the North. To say the least it's hugely overwhelming. Even beginning to put an itinerary together is seriously daunting there's just so much to choose from and too much info on the net. That's why I turned here. Anyone’s guidance on a route and how to get from A to B would Be Invaluable.

Initially I had written down in my Things to Do list:

      See Elephants and National Park
Go for A longish cycle (Day-trip)
Train Ride (Perhaps through the Hills)
      Some form Of hike forest-jungle
See some wildlife + (See Some stunning Views)
See Some Impressively big Buddha Statues

Now after reading about Colombo, West Coast, The South, The hill Country, The Ancient Cities and the East my mind is boggled. My List has morphed into another Guidebook. The last thing I want to do is be running around like a headless chicken trying to see too Much .I'm clueless which direction to start going. I'd like to see some Nice views, wildlife, Rural Villages and experience Sri lanka and its people not at a frenetic pace. I'm not really interested in history to much and I'm not a mad drinker also I will be on a budget so I doubt I’ll be hiring Drivers at all. Any tips on how to fit these in or the best approach or any advice would be more than welcome.

The only part I have decided on is to go to Negombo Over Colombo, So I will start out from here. It sounds like a place where I would be able to do a nice cycle and see some fishing towns. That’s what id really love to see authentic Villages and People. The only other concrete conclusion I have is it will have to be either the West or East coast to see some nice beaches both sound great. Galle again doesn’t hold too much to interest me, but it would be nice to see some nice beaches on the way south on the west coast and some towns and villages. So Maybe The south coast might be worth it (Love Fishing) It’s a toss up between west coast and The east coast for beaches. The east coast sounds a lot more interesting given its struggles over the past few decades and Argum bay and around sound equally nice any Opinions.I’m leaning towards the East.

Negombo-West Coast-South (Either option would give me a good foundation
      Negombo-East to start my trip)

The hill country sounds great (God It has So Much to Offer and I Bet Id get Great Views) I would like to see Horton plains – Worlds End .What stood out here was Sinharaja forest reserve for a trek (Even If Only for the day) or the Knuckles Range any advice would be Fantastic and also any recommendations for the hill country .I hear Nuwara Eliya and Ella are nice but I don’t want to bite of more than I can chew. What I have added to my original Wish List is Anuradhapura and Mirissa also Sounds Really Nice. So From my original list to Sinjahara ,Anuradhapura etc and the other places I have mentioned Could Anyone suggest what is achievable and what isn’t worth it. I’m Not sure where to fit the National Park into all of this Maybe once I have a rough route There may be one that will suit in the area I am in.

I’m sorry for the ridiculously long Questionnaire. I feel this trip is out of my depth at the moment and if I had a Rough Idea of where I was going I would be an awful lot happier so any Feedback I’d be So grateful.
      Thanking you

    • Whale watching from Unawatuna or Mirissa

Sri Lanka Jul 14, 2014 at 7:17 AM

We would like to go whale watching, but are uncertain if we can do it from Unawatuna or should rather stay a night in Mirissa to do it?
As it seems like the tours start around 6.00 or 6.30 I assume it is best to stay in the town where you head out from?
We would prefere to go from Unawatuna to avoid changing hotel, but uncertain if it the right choice?

Any advice on where to go from and which company to use?

Sri Lanka Jul 9, 2014 at 2:59 PM

going to sri Lanka in 3 weeks (late booking), roughly how much can we expect to spend on meals, both in hotels and cafes? Going with our 2 teenage boys who have hollow legs so won't be fine dining too often!

Revised Route September 1st (Any Input Very Welcome)

Sri Lanka Jul 8, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Im wondering if ye would be so kind as to give me your thoughts on what I have been thinking following my last post.I promise I wont annoy ye too much anymore but I could do with the advice.

Looking At the Map I'm Wondering Is this feasible in the 17days and also How would be the best way to travel between each..

      Negombo (2-3 Nights)
Sigiriya (Habarana Nartional park) and do my cycle trip
      Trincomalee (2-3 Nights)
Maybe one more stop on the east coast
      Sinharaja (2Nights)
      Haputale (2Nights)

(Nights in each Place Just guessing But I dont want to Rush)

Therefore I would Skip Kandy and Finish my trip In Haputale.I think I would Be quite Happy with this Itinerary.Seem's to be a good Mixture. I'm Unsure where to base myself and for how long in Sigiriya (Habarana National Park) And Anuradhapura. What Do You think! And Ill be heading to trincomalee after.

I finally feel I am getting Somewhere thanks for the Ideas Guys :)

      Thanks Fergal

    • Wadduwa with children?

by SaraLu Online Now Nov 14, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Hello, we are planning a trip for 2-3 weeks to Sri Lanka in jan/feb next year, and are looking at Wadduwa. How is the beach? And are the currents bad? We Went to Bentota 2 years ago (with one Child), and loved it, now we have 2 Children (1,3 years old) and are going more on a budget/midrange. Is there a few restaurants in the village/Town?
The transfer time seems reasonable, and we Think that we have found a nice Place to stay, Since we have the small Children, most of the time will be spent at the beach or Close surroundings.
      Would be happy for input!

    • Spa damage and hairdryers!!!

by rhinokitch Online Now May 25, 2005 at 7:59 AM

      Hello everyone.
I will be travelling from Leeds, England, with my future wife on the 2nd July 2005 and then getting married at the Blue Water Hotel. I read on another website (which I now cannot find!!)that due to the tsunami, the spa was due to be closed until the beginning of July. But I've read on this forum that the hotel is back up and running as usual. Can someone please let me know whether the spa is now up and running ahead of schedule?
Also, to save baggage space, could someone let me know whether the rooms have hairdryers provided?
      Thank you. Michael.

    • Villa ocean view wedding

by Dawnpears Online Now Feb 2, 2005 at 12:21 PM

I am getting married in April at the Villa ocean view hotel and included in our package is traditional Sri Lankan wedding Attire. We have asked the travel agent a number of times what exactly is included with this and I have emailed the resort and all they have said is that its a Sari and local jewellry. Has anyone else out there had this package? I booked with first choice. Does the jewellry include the tikka and bangles?? Do you really not need to take anything clothing wise for the big day? What does the groom wear?? I dont want to go all that way and forget something! Any info would be great.

by MGrantham Online Now Jan 5, 2005 at 4:30 AM

I am adding to our existing question we already have on this page. We were due to get married in Sri Lanka departing on 6th Feb 2005. We booked our holiday for 15 people through TV Travel Shop, and its a Thomas Cook holiday. We are experiencing nothing but problems with both companies. Neither will offer a refund and we have been advised to wait a couple of days and then we will be able to receive our money back. Is anyone else experiencing so many problems. We have spent the last two days on the telephone trying to sort out this matter and we are no further forward. We have been offered alternative locations such as Cyprus, Canary Island & Cuba. We are happy with Cuba but the TV Travel shop do not offer Cuba as they are an American company. Can anyone help in our battle with both companies?

by DebbieJ Online Now Jan 4, 2005 at 10:45 AM

My sister is due to get married at this hotel on valentine's day and all 15 of us are due to fly out on 6th feb. Thomas Cook has told us we cannot have a refund or can not offer a suitable alternative destination (offers so far, Lanzarote or Tenerife). so we are stuck! Can anyone give us an honest view of what damage has been done to this hotel and surrounding areas? Also has anyone got any views on travelling to this area. We are also travelling with 4 young children.

I am booked to have a tour of Sri Lanka andthen a hotel stay in Wadduwa departing the UK on 12th January. I know it's not going to happen. You know it's not going to happen. Everyone knows it's not going to happen. Hayes and Jarvis (my tour operator) will not make a decision as to what they will do until Friday 7th January - 5 days before we are due to go. Am I the only person who feels this is ridiculous? There is no way that anyone should now be going on holiday to Sri Lanka until such time as the infrastructure can support it - with the devastation, all the resources are needed for the local population - for whom it is a terrible time as they have lost loved ones and possessions
