I'm a single guy travelling alone for my first visit to Stockholm this week-end (29 Nov - 1 Dec). I'm originally from South Africa and currently live in London. I love galleries, good food, live music and just chilling. I have booked a hotel in Stureplan.
I'd appreciate any advice about what's going on worth doing at the moment, where are some restaurants to eat alone, and where are good places for an early 40s guy to meet other people? Also some nice long runs, or running groups in the city would be nice.
I wanted to ask if i can call a premium number from a prepaid sim card and from a public payphone .
I want to visit Northern Sweden to see the Northern Lights in late Feb/early Mar 2014. I had intended spending 10 days to try to ensure that I had a good chance of seeing at least one good display. Is spending 10 days to much?
I need to find something to do during the days. I have been looking at the prices of tours in Kiruna and they appear to be very expensive. I maybe able to take one tour. Are there other activities that can be done alone and safely e.g. hiking, shoe-shoeing? Is it possible to jump on some form of public transport and go somewhere just for the ride and scenery?
Are there tour companies that I should steer clear of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are thinking of going on family holiday to Sweden in August 2014, we have four boys age 3-13.
The time frame is 10-14 days. We will spend 4-5 days in Stockholm (makes sense ?) and then would like to stay in a countryside in a cottage or villa and having day trips . We will rent a car for the days outside Stockholm.
Can you recommend a location for staying 7-10 days in the countryside where we can find sufficient interest and attractions (natural trails, cable cars, caves or mines, water activities, ect.) in about 1 hour driving ? We prefer no more than 3 hours driving distance from Stockolm.
I want to visit the above named military/armour museum which, as I understand it, is quite close to Strangnas?... I would be getting the train from Stockholm (I think) so a daytrip is an option, or possibly moving on to Goteborg after seeing the museum. What do you guys think?
I was surprised that the museum was listed on this website in the 'things to do' section
