      Mongol Rally through Russia

      Russia May 5, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Does anyone have experience with the areas of Russia that the Mongol Rally generally goes through (i.e. the northern coast of the Caspian between Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and the Altai region crossing from Kazakhstan to Mongolia). especially the border crossings, and driving a foreign vehicle through these regions? What can we expect?

      Safety of Dubna Russia?

      Dubna May 2, 2013 at 12:23 PM

I will be going to Dubna for five weeks this summer and was wondering how safe it is as a whole. I am looking to do some morning running and want to make sure that this is advisable. What is crime like in the city? Are there areas to avoid, times to avoid being out alone (of course middle of the night, but otherwise). My assumption is that it is quite a safe place due to it being a scientific town with a relatively small size, but I would like to make sure before I go.

Will running be a problem or hazardous, or will I be fine if I exercise the normal precautions used when running elsewhere?

      Evening program

Saint Petersburg May 20, 2013 at 11:43 AM

      Hi,

I will be in St-P for work for three days next week.
When looking at the evening events St-P offers, ballet in one of the theaters seems to be a good call. Is it possible to buy tickets last-minute? Or are they often sold out in advance?

Also, is it possible to join an existing city tour last-minute? I can't really say in advance which day I will be having the most time to do this but I definately want to explore St-P a bit.

Thanks lot for your kind assistance.

I am travelling to Moscow next week. I would need to do lot of emails, browsing and navigation there. Carrying data packages from India is far to expensive. What would be a good and cheap option to use internet in Russia. Do we have readily available Wi-Fi zones there?

I'll be in Petrozavodsk in July. Can anybody suggest what i should have a look at or where to go. I've seen online about Kizhi. I understand that there is a boat trip from the waterfront.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    • Secured Train reservations.

      Moscow May 3, 2013 at 3:56 AM

I wish to take a Trans Mongolian Train Trip from Moscow to Beijing with stop overs in Irkutz and then Ulan Bator. I have had a previous bad experience (not Russia) of buying and paying for tickets on line which was never secured or my money refunded. I am also concerned about being charged at the whim of the vendor. On line I see Real Russia is recommended as an agency to buy these tickets from. Please assist. I need to secure with reputable suppliers for accommodation & transport in proof to apply for a Russian Visa here in South Africa.

      Which Hotel?

      Moscow May 10, 2013 at 4:53 AM

I have oportunity to visit Moscow( won the trip) but i only have limited choice of hotels.
      There are 4 choices:

      • Maxima Zarya ( Description)

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area north of Moscow's centre, within walking distance of Petrovsko-Razumovskaya metro station. The hotel enjoys vicinity with Estate Ostankino, Palace of Count Sheremetyev, All-Russian Exhibition Centre and magnificent Botanical Garden.

      • Maxima Slavija ( Description )

The hotel is located in the VDNH area, just off a busy road leading to Moscow's centre. There is a shopping mall and supermarket open 24 hours a day only minutes from the hotel.Hotel is conveniently located on Yaroslavskoe shosse not far from the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (V.V.C.) and Ostankino television centre. You will see beautiful "Elk Island" ("Losiny Ostrov") national park out of your windows.

      • Cosmos:( Discription)

Hotel Cosmos is located to the north of Moscow city centre on Prospekt Mira. It is situated adjacent to the exhibition centre VDNKh, and next to the metro station of the same name.

      • Maxima Panorama

Maxima Panorama arrangement is one of the most important advantages of this hotel – just a few meters from metro station “Avtozavodskaya”, in a business part of Moscow: 4 Masterkova str., 115280, Moscow.

Flight is to and from Domodedjevo, in some istances is just over 60km away.
      Any idea on transfer?
Last time i was in Moskva, was in 1987 and we stayed in Student Dorm.
I experianced Moskva Metro, and I am more than Ok using it.After all i lived in London for 4 years!
My question for you Moscovites it which of this hotels has easiest access to the Center, Kremljin, Sv Vasilij Church, Red Square....
I kept looking at the Metro Map, but what i see on the map is not the nessesary fastes and straitforward way getting to the center and I get totally confused.
      Any help appriciated.

by nponpabga Online Now Jul 21, 2006 at 9:27 AM

I'd prefer not to fly, just to keep costs down. Domestic or intenational flights entirely within the CIS also may not be the safest. I flight to Moscow would be nice, but then I'd have to back track to Southern Russia, almost a 24 train trip. Baku seems like a good idea, but a visa is still necessary... but this is a solid option, thanks for your time. Any other means would be appreciated... boat on the black sea to Sochi?

What is the best way to get to Russia from Georgia? it seems like it will be like jumping through hoops. From Tblisi to southern russia, particularly Volgograd or other hubs (e.g. krasnodar, Rostov-na-donu, astrakhan, I guess even Vladikavkas) is what I am looking for. Thanks in advance!

hi everyone ! My husband and me are planning to go to Volgograd for a specific reason : see my grandpa's best friend... before he is leaving that world. But i have huge problems: First I have never been there. + when I check on services of maps, roads with his address to locate where in Volgograd he is living... the search is always ending with certainly a map but the wrong name of the street. All of this to say that i am a bit scared to end up in a city I do not know... shall I trust a taxi driver that will for sure drive me to my grand dad's friends front door?... I don't speak russian... i don't really know where to ask for advices (to be sure to end up , from my hotel to the Russian buddy, safe !!)
