It is afew years since I was last in Vietnam so many changes may have occured. The streets were wall to wall bikes, motorbikes and a few cars when I was there. As a pedestrian you set off across roads at a steady rate(no unexpected moves) and all the traffic goes round yoy. If you are inexperienced on a bike, you may find that you cannot cycle in such a densely packed crowd or cope with pedestrians. Still I suppose you learn through practice. Also one of the best things about Ho Chi Mihn was the day trips there is a cafe called Cafe Sin which offers great value day trips(or at least there usd to be). I would strongly recommend the trip to the Mekong Delta or to the Cu Chi tunnels - built by the Viet Kong during the Vietnam War.

In regards to reaching China alot depends on what part of China you want to visit. If you have time and want to visit Southern China the following is a very good option and one I recently did myself. - Book a one way ticket from Saigon to Hanoi through the Vietnam Airlines website. I was able to get a one way ticket for59 US, but that rate is only available through that website. - Once in Hanoi there is much to see and do but back to getting to China. From Hanoi you can catch a bus that will take you across the border and to Nanning, China. Its about a 8 hour bus ride that will take you through customs quickly (you must already have a China Visa if your a US citizen) - From Nanning there are busses and trains to such destination like Guilin, Shenzen, and longer routes to Shanghai etc. I would recommend catching the four hour bus to Guilin and experiencing the most beautiful part of China (in my opinion) Hope that gives some insight and options!
