We are traveling to village in July. Are we permitted to bring small gifts for the children? If so, any suggestions on what they need? Also, anyone travel on prince 2 ship or red dragon junk company here? We are looking at 3 day 2 night and would appreciate your thoughts on how your experience was! Thanks!
I have been to Vietnam several times over the past year, both on my own and as a tour leader for danish tour groups. Some of the people i have taken there have brought little gifts but have had a hard time finding people to give it as the vietnamese are not poor to an extend where they live in misery and it seems a little out of place to give them gifts. Buying something from their little shops which are everywhere anywehre you go in the country is a better idea as you keep the wheels going in the local economy that way. I travel a lot in South East Asia every year and while i bring little gifts and second hand clothing to a place like the Philippines, where many people live in the streets, i never do so in Vietnam cause it seems out of place to give them things. Most Vietnamese have some kinda small business beside their rice fields and buying things such as drinks, sweets or whatever you might need from these little places will fuel some money in to the economy of the working class vietnamese.

Dear Carolynhoffman, It's hard to sit here and think what to buy for your children :). Through your trip, you will have chance to do shopping at both big and small shop, so you can find somethings special there. About Prince and Red Dragon Junk. They are both owned by Indochina Junk. Prince 2 has 4 cabins and Red Dragon has 5. Of course, the service quality, food and the itinareries are the same and it is neccessary to note that they are quite good and amazing. In addition, Red Dragon is 1year older than Prince 2 but the former charge you higher price because of its fantastic appearence :-bd. I work for a travel agency in Vietnam, specializing in Halong cruise. So if you need any help, donot hesitage to contact me: sales@hanoitohalong.com
