Train to Venice

by markgaust Online Now Apr 23, 2012 at 3:31 AM

Hi, My partner & I want to travel by train (daytime) late July 2012 Vienna to Venice. It appears there are some very inexpensive tickets available Euro 29.00. Are these tickets comfortable for the 7 hr journey? I am quite tall 195cm and 61 yo but fit and active. Is it possible to reserve window seats? Please give me some avice or suggestions.

The daytime trains to Venice go only until Villach where you have to change into a bus, € 29 tickets are limited, early booking if possible, and you can´t change the date or train/bus. Seat reservation for the train is possible, € 3 extra. You could also go by train to Villach (online from € 19) then by bus to Udine (online from € 9), from there by regional train maybe around € 10. There are only night trains between Villach and Udine and Venice with a rather uncomfortable arrival time.

The ticket offer doesn't affect the type of seat you get, so you are really asking whether train seats are comfortable. Imo, yes they are and, unlike plane or bus seats, it is very easy indeed to get up and take a walk to 'stretch your legs' on a train.

Is it safe to say that there is no one-seat train ride between Vienna and Venice?

Do you mean 'are there direct trains between Vienna and Venice', foot? I.e. you don't have to change trains? There are a couple of direct trains..one at 1929 which arrives at 0256, and the overnight one at 2040 which arrives at 0834. Otherwise you have to make at least one change. bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/... will show you all Vienna>Venice departures per day.

Thank you all for your answers. It appears the day time option is train to Villach and then bus to Vienna. I have been able to book the budget fare of Euro29. I presume this is 2nd class. I'm still unsure as to whether I can book a seat or if, in fact, it is necessary for 24 July.

Venice to Vienna, the seat reservation you have to do when you make your online booking. If you booked allready, for the bus i think you will have a reservation number on your ticket (it´s compulsory), the train starts in Villach, it should be quite possible to get the seat you want (i never make reservations in Austria). It would be possible to make the resevation by phone (rather complicated, +43 (0)51717 1, usualy quite some waiting, then you have to pick it up in Villach at the ticket machine or ticket counter, have your credit Card and ticket ready). The bus leaves from Venezia Tronchetto, get there with a People Mover from Piazzale Roma (short walk from the Train station) and have € 1 ready for the ticket machine, at the last station down the escalator and to the left.It arrives in Villach in front of the Train Station, you have about 20 minutes time there.
