We have 4 hours in Vienna: specifically, between 4pm and 8pm. Optimal plan: we arrive at Westbahnhof at 345pm from Salzburg & take the subway to Herrengasse & try to get in to the Hofburg before the ticket office closes at 430pm. Will we make it? Can we see the main stuff (including a quick look at the Chapel & maybe the Butterfly exhibit) or will they kick us out at exactly at 530pm? Next, scoot over to St Stephens Church and admire the exterior. Can we go have a looksee inside and maybe take a photo without flash or is that a big no-no? Can we still access the towers or will they be closed around 6pm (or will it be too dark?). Is that a good church to visit or should we give up and simply enjoy the area around the Hofburg? We have to be back at the Westbahnhof for our 840pm train so we have to be on the subway back there before 8pm, is best. Hot tips please? It's rushed but that's all we have for time to spare in Vienna this time around (we'll be back another year to visit at length). Also, we need a cafe with good food, good portions, decent prices, good views, around those 2 sites, open until 8pm. Ideas?
April - Oktober : Mon - Fr till 16.45 Sat.&Sun.till 18.15
November - March:daily untill 15:45
What you should know: its very hot inside, so you can leave your coats there at the entrance, that might cost some extra time and maybe they restrict the entrance to maybe 30 min before closingtime, BUT I dont know !
WHAT part of Hofburg are you talking about ?
Kunsthistorisches Museum - open daily except mondays untill 06.00pm on thursdays even untill 09.00pm
Naturhistorisches Museum ?
Schatzkammer / treasury ? - daily except WED. untill 05.30pm
Ephesos Museum - open WED-SUN untill 06.00pm
Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer - open WED-SUN untill 06.00pm
Stephansdom: you can enter in the back and ALWAYS walk around there untill maybe around 07.00pm. Step to the fence and you will see the famous pulpit there in a distance of just 5 meters.
Mostly its not possible to walk behind that fence while churchservice is going on, taking pics is possible without flash.
The chapel of Hofburg,/ Hofkapelle where the famous boys are singing will be locked and it also does not look special from OUTside !!!
good coffee and cakes but certainly not really cheap or big portions: AIDA - a Kaffeehaus-chain, one is next to Stephansdom at the corner Singerstrasse/Kärntnerstr.
