with this very late nite train, what can we do in finding a very close by (restaurant or cafe) or within the station- somewhere safe to wait for the train? From the site, even the Station Waiting Room would be closed at mid-night! We probably be dozing off with your luggages by then. Many thanks.
I would probably travel to the starting station of the train (Venice) or to Bologna few hours before. The trains in Italy are really cheap and the same train (depending on your car!) is starting from Venice (22:51) or from Rome, passing Bologna at 22:55. The prices: Verona -> Venice (Venezia Santa Lucia) is 6.20 Euro and 120 kilometers Verona -> Bologna is 7.60 Euroand 114 kilometers Which is better entirely depends on your car reservation because the train is joined at Verona from two parts. If you did not do any reservation yet - than take one from either Bologna or Venice (same price!), decide by the convenience. This is a know trick, I use it pretty often if the train prices are reasonably low: travel to/from a different station and board the train earlier (or de-train later). Example: - I had to travel from Budapest to Chop (Ukraine, ex-USSR). Instead of de-training in an ungodly hour I bought the ticket to Mukachevo, only few Euro more... and de-trained in early morning instead of the middle of the night. - I had to take the train from Traunstein via Salzburg to Budapest. Knowing that there is a freight train incident and in such cases the Bayern Länderticket can be allowed on the EuroNight trains - I bought a Bayern Länderticket Single (21 Euro), endorsed it locally for all trains by the station manager and took the EuroNight train from Munich. This is better than board the train at 1:50 in Salzburg... because EN did not stop in Traunstein. And did sightsee Augsburg for free ;-)

Well, apart the skilled advice you already recieved, VERY close to the station there aren't those many option to stay late. A restaurant 10/15 minutes walk from the station is http://www.trattoriamuramare.com/ Good seafood, but not obviously on the cheap side. A few meters closer the is a brazilian restaurant: ristorantebrasilianoportoale... Both along Corso Porta Nuova, Station side. But even Piazza Bra isn't that far: 5 minutes by taxy, 20/25 walking to the station: many of the restaurants stay open late, this one (lecantine-arena.com/cantinea..., hidden underground and a few meters from the arena, has often live music till late in the night. Up to you Ciao Francesco
