Anyone know if there is passport control on the trains or in the Ventimiglia train station when catching a train to go into France from Ventimiglia (even a TER train?). Similarly, is there any passport control in Menton for those coming into France from Italy. Any advice/info greatly appreciated Thanks!!
There is no passport control between Italy and France, because both countries belong to the Schengen agreement (no more border controls to people crossing common borders). More info on Schengen here: ec.europa.eu/youreurope/nav/... However, you are expected to have an ID document (passport or ID card) with you, because you MAY be requested to exhibit it.

Barbara, I think that regardless of where the OP comes from, his/her documents will only be checked when s/he first enters the Schengen area.

France and Italy are both in the Schengen area. There are no formal passport controls or border checks within Schengen, although that does not mean that random checks may not be carried out (especially if police are loooking for someone in particular). So you should always carry formal ID (passport or legally-acceptable ID card).

Barbara, what I mean is that if he is in Ventimiglia, he is already in the Schengen area. If he comes from outside the Schengen area, he will have already exhibited his ID document upon entering it (at an airport, seaport or border crossing with a third country). If he is Italian, he has nothing to do, apart from carrying his identity card with him just in case of random controls.

Thank you. All the more reason to make sure one is carrying appropriate identification then.
