While I am in Venice from 25th to 28th July I want my kids to experience the markets that are on small boats. They have watched it in movies. Is there something like that in Venice and how do I go about with it? please advise. Many thanks
I have never heard about the markets on a small boats in Venezia but your question sounds very interesting as I really love Venezia! I have found this link about a boat where is it possible to buy fruit and vegetable arte.it/guida-arte/venezia/i... Address: Ponte dei Pugni - Fondamenta Gerardini Opening time: Monday – Saturday from 7.30 to 13.30 and from 15.30 to 19.30 Transports: Vaporetto: linea 1 - Ca' Rezzonico More popular is the fish market of Rialto. Enjoy Venezia! *Nico*

Thank you for asking this! I have visited Venice hundreds of time as I live 40 minutes train from it and never heard about this! I see there are some resource online, I will try to find out more. Beside those floating market I strongly advise you to go to the Rialto fish market, especially early in the morning when they are setting up. and to take them to the Libreria Acqua Alta that deserve to call itself the most wonderful bookstore in the world. see more about it here "The most Beautiful bookstore in the world" - Books Tip by oriettaIT Happy travel

I never heard of any sort of boat market in Venice (Venezia, Italy)... Bangkok was known as the "Venice of the East" in the past as it was filled with many canals and, once up a time, there were also boat markets. Do movie reflect reality? historymatters.gmu.edu/mse/f...

Markets on small boats are some boats with fruits on vegetables on them on sale.

Yes - I never saw a "market" as such when we were there but I do remember a fruit/veg boat in Murano or Burrano. johndavies.org.uk/venice2006...

Did not come across any markets from boats while in Venice, not anything that can compare to such markets in Asia, like along the Mekong Delta for example. However, you may consider visiting Mercato di Rialto and La Pescheria, which are open-air fresh fish and vegetable markets along the Grand Canal, not too far from the Rialto Bridge. It is opposite the Ca' d'Oro water bus stop. Hope this helps.

When I was there last time (albeit this was in 2007), I saw many small boats selling vegetables and fish. One was near Chiesa San Barnaba, at Fondamenta Gerardini: maps.google.de/maps?q=45.433... and another one in Castello, at Fondamenta Sant'Ana, here: maps.google.de/maps?q=45.432... I am sure there are more, for the locals, where the locals live, who can't go to the big one at Rialto.

What movies? They cannot possibly have been about Venice because there is no "floating market" there as there is in, say, Bankgkok: in the sense of a collection of boats selling different things, in the same way as you would have different stalls at a land market (e.g. Rialto). Nevertheless, hanging out anywhere along the Grand Canal (e.g. one of the bridges - or riding up and down on a vaporetto), you will see any number of different types of boats doing different things: fireboat, police (carabinieri) boat, garbage-collecting boat, gas-canister delivery boat, wholesale grocery delivery boat, building materials delivery/construction débris removal boat, maybe wedding/ funeral gondola ...

This is what I was referring to: "Vegetables on the water, S Barnaba" - Markets and supermarkets Tip by sachara Fruit and vegetable sellers mostly from Sant'Erasmo. I am sure, the original poster does not refer to anything like floating markets as we know them from Asia.

I stayed at a bed & breakfast in Castello when I was in Venice and every morning there were a couple of boats selling fruits and vegetables in the nearest canal. I would buy my breakfast there almost every morning. It was delightful. However, that said, I didn't notice anything like this later in the day, I only saw them in the mornings, and I didn't notice any boats like these on the Grand Canal. Maybe because my B&B was in a residential area and not a more business-oriented / tourist area?

My hotels brochure had a stunning photo of a gondola loaded with glorious fruit and veggies - the reality was a motor boat loaded with boxes. I did ask at the hotel where it was possible take a similar photo and he just laughed and said "tourists".

I think there is some confusion here over the word 'Market'. I would not call it a market but there are many canal barges selling fruit and vegetables, which can be found all over the island, but mainly in the residential area of Castello.

What an interesting bunch of answers you have. Iive near Venice and never see fruit and vegetables sold from a boat. They have a wonderful market for this and fish.. you will see this I am sure. Unfortunately "Hollywood" creates some things that are just not real... when I moved here I had a lot of stereotypes and ideas in my head removed... ha ha If you want to give your kids a few extra cheap gondola rides, check this out on how.... one or two single boat does not mean anything, if so... any place has its own market... In Venice a stallholder on boats is a consequence, it'll be hard to have an RV or something like it on canals many RV or many boat together [with a scheduled calendar], this could be called market une hirondelle ne fait pas le printemps

Take it from me - there are many of these barges dotted around Venice and the lagoon islands every day, selling fruit and vegetables. I never suggested there was a 'market' - on the contrary, I stated quite clearly that there was not a market. Nor did I suggest that these vessels arrived in fleets.

A short remark on hotel photos by the hotel. Don't trust them so much. Those shots of the big pool often turn out to be a small pool, and the room is found to be much smaller. Moreover, if they leave out something.. like the bathroom, you have to figure ... a tiny shower, or sometimes a shower that is over the toilet.. ha ha. best of luck, dave
