Less crowded city or town

by boylec Online Now Jun 2, 2012 at 8:14 AM

I am staying for a night and venice and then would like to stay a couple of nights in a smaller town/city nearby. I won't have a car so I'll need somewhere that can be reached by bus/train. I should probably spend more than a night and day in Venice but I'll be there in the summer and would like to see it but then go somewhere less crowded. Looking for somewhere that has nice scenery and is a good place to walk around and see the sights. Thanks for any suggestions.

Vicenza is only a 60-minute train ride from Venice. It's a beautiful, very walkable city with incredibly impressive architecture. You'll love it.

Padua and Verona are delightful as well. In fact, all three so far mentioned, Padua, Verona and Vicenza (above), are all on the same road leading west out of Venice so you could choose to visit one or all three if you wished.

We have had a great time in Parma, Modena, and Verona. Padua looks interesting but have not made it to there yet. All of these are an easy train ride from Venice. Happy trails, Randy

There is also Chioggia 50 km south of Venice. Called little Venice. You´ll find a lot of pictures on VT. Theres the possibility to reach Venice by bus and in summer by ferry. I recommend Hotel www.hotelmediterraneochioggia.it They rent bicycle for free and the staff is outstanding.

I live outside of Padova which has previously been mentioned. The train to Venice is 8 euros round trip, and the stations are in good places for the action. However, let me mention Chioggia...This town is where the American Watercolor Artists take their fellow artists to paint. It is a great place to see boats of all sizes, see real fishermen, eat cheaper fish dinners, and you can ferry over to Venice. This is the route people used to go, many many years ago. They would take the train to Chioggia and then enter Venezia by the water. This IS a good plan for first time visitors. You get to see the water and then capture the beauty of Venice by water route. I have some tips on Chioggia restaurants, etc. if you are interested. I provide plenty of photos. I also have photos of Padova, you will find them if you search a bit. Good luck, Dave
