Hello, I am planning to go from Venice to Ljubljana in the summer with some friends, but on the way, stop off in Trieste. What is the best way to get to Trieste from Venice; bus or train? There doesn't seem to be too much information on the internet about times and fares or trains, or buses. Any help would be gratefully received!
There is ample information about train journeys in Italy (and elsewhere in Europe) if you look at the official country railways website. For Italy, my preferred link is trenitalia.com/homepage_en.h... which gives you times, details and fares in English. However, information is not held many weeks in advance...just check for the same day of the week next week. Neither times nor fares will change much, if at all, before your visit. Venice>Trieste is not a problem. Venice>Ljubljana is, because of various longstanding difficulties between the two railway companies. Thre are regular Trieste >Ljubljana bus services. Timetables and info (including English) here: autostazionetrieste.it/index... So train to Trieste and then bus onwards is easiest.

There are regional Trains from Venice Santa Lucia to Trieste every hour, journey about 2 hours, fare 14 euros. There are buses from Trieste to Ljubljana, but a nicer way is to take the historic tram from Trieste Piazza Oberdan (2 min walk from the station) to Villa Opicinia, which is on the Italian side of the Slovenian border. The historic tram is a Trieste institution in itself, it becomes a funicular up the escarpment, about the only tram in the world to be both a tram and funicular. It runs every 20 minutes until 20:00, fare 1.10 euros. Now take a taxi 2 or 3 miles across the border to Sezana. 12 euros. Comfortable trains run from Sezana to Ljubljana every 2-3 hours, fare 8.95 euros or so. This is a really nice scenic trip, snaking round lush green valleys. A great introduction to Slovenia!
