Hi all We (my husband and me) are travelling to Venice end of next week and are going to be there for 1 day and 1 night. Staying at a hotel in Lido...can you please advise what are the things that are a must see / do ....thanks
I know it is my thing to do but i just loved the modern art at the Peggy Guggenheim. It is a very special bijou gallery - if yu go get there early. Venice is magnificent - but that was my favourite thing.

ooh - my second favourite thing was a vaporetto ride up the grand canal by night - the palace windows are lit up and you can peert into other people's lives

I loved my gondola ride, and the tour of the Doge's Palace. But what I really remember is going up the bell tower in St. Mark's Square for a panoramic view of the city.

the vaporetto is expensive - 6 euro i think per trip - but if you plan to use them a lot - like go to Murano and Burano - and you will use them staying at the Lido - then you can get a 3 day ticket - we got ours at an office in the station

Buy yourself a Venice Guide book. You will see that the Grand Canal zig zags through Venice like a snake. If you plan correctly, you can do just about all the popular sites in one day on foot. Starting from Santa Lucia Station, you could make your way to Rialto through the back streets of San Polo. Cross the bridge and make your way to Piazza San Marco. Check out the queues for the Basilica. If they're not too big, then take a look inside. Again, if the queues allow, on your way out of the Piazza, you cold climb the bell tower. From there head for Campo San Stefano. Stop for lunch. Cross the Accademia bridgeand take an hour or two looking round the Accademia and on to the Peggy Guggenheim museum. You'll find all sorts of gems to look at on the way. Definitely take the vaporetto ride up the Grand Canal after dark. Get on at Piazzale Roma and get off at Vallaresso. Right in front of you is Harry's Bar. You could stop for a pre dinner drink Find a little osteria or trattoria for dinner.
