My husband and I conduct walking tours of Venice in the non-touristy areas. Let me know if you might be interested in something like that.
Venice doesn't have any nightlife except the Venice Jazz Club in Dorsoduro. There are other musical events in the evenings at some churches or small venues for a Vivaldi concert or a small opera, always quite nice.
Your hotel concierge will be a great source of info about local exhibitions going on that week.

well if you think about the nightlife, please consider the Tolentini area, close to the University Ca' Foscari...there are many bars and pubs! :-)
