Do I need a visa to visit on a cruise for few hours?

Hi, I'm Russian citizen with a greencard, do I need a visa to come for a few hours with a cruiseship? Does anyone actually checks visas at the docks? I heard you do not need a visa if on a cruise but not sure how true that is:) Thanks for any info!
