Ghats are not very far from railway station. You can take a taxi or auto riksha or even a cycle riksha. Cycle riksha may charge INR 15 to 20. Distance is nearly 4 kms.
From ghat you may visit famous Kasi Viswanath Temple. You may have to stand long hours in "Q" to get an entry to temple. From temple you may go to shopping centres on foot.

Yes, take a taxi or rickshaw to the ghats, there are lots of boats offering service there. If you want to do only a one-way trip I recommend to start at Harishandra Ghat (small cremation Ghat), take a boat up to Marnikarnika Ghat (the main cremation Ghat; both are the turning points for many tours). From Marnikarnika Ghat you can continue along the river to less crowded Ghats and then take your turn into the old villages and go back through the alleys. In the area near the Dasaswamedh ghat there are lots of shops selling silk and sarees (and lots of owners to invite you in, so no chance to miss them).
    Enjoy your trip!
