Excuse my ignorance ,but as Vang Vieng is on the Mekong river is it possible to get there and travel on via the river. Thanks in advance
Vang Vieng is not on the Mekong river, but on the much smaller Nam Song river and it's quite narrow and can not be navigated by boat.

No it, not the Mekhong , it is just a small river where you can go tubing, kayaking and drinking at one of the many bars on the river. Not the best place to visit unless you are young and want to get drunk/stoned with 100s of other travellers.

I was in Vang Vieng 10 years ago and back then it was a real gem, but these days it seems as it has tunred in to a hub for young people smoking opium and getting drunk. The scenery around Vang Vieng is really nice though.
