Cost of Living in Vancouver

by QuimG Online Now Jan 10, 2006 at 7:12 AM

Hello there. I am going to move to Vancouver next summer and I need some hints regarding cost of life (I have to negotiate the conditions of the job assignment with my company). It will be very helpful to know the average cost of some usual things like milk, sugar, rice, bread, etc. Do you somewhere where I can get this info? Also I am planning to rent a two bedrooms appartment downtown. Can anybody tell me what could be the average price? I am thinking of a furnished appartment, but depending on the price of furnitures, it may be a good idea to get it unfurnished and buy the necessary stuff. What do you think? I will appreciate very much your tips. Thanks in advance Joaquim

Furnished downtown apartments can be very expensive, but it depends on what you're used to. Take a look at the Craigslist website for more information on prices - it'll give you an excellent idea of what rent costs: http://vancouver.craigslist.org/apa To give you a ballpark estimation, it's not unusually to pay1300 for a one bedroom, unfurnished 700 square foot apartment in downtown Vancouver, especially if it's a nice building in a nice location. It's usually a lot more for a furnished apartment. Also, the price of food varies depending on the stores and neighbourhoods you shop in. In downtown Vancouver, there's a neighbourhood called Yaletown, where all the grocery stores are designer, organic-food stories and gourmet import stores (ie: Choices, Urban Fare), and you'd be paying a lot more money for the basics like milk, eggs, sugar, orange juice, etc, there than you would if you were to drive out of downtown to a Safeway, or a Canadian Superstore, or a Save-on-Foods store.

Very precise answer from Robyn. There are even more expensive rents. Nice furnished apartments are in demand from the Film industry that seems to spend at a higher rate than morst people. There are less attractive suites for rent but are usually used by a some what undesireable crowd. Have a look at www.lordstanley.com/ http://www.lamondproperties.com/ atlific.com/city/vancouver_b...

Thanks Robyn and Griff. Very much appreciated. I guess it will not be easy to find anything Downtown for the money my company is going to spend on me (around 1000 canadian dollars). So let me bother you again to ask for advice. Which zone would choose if you were me, single in the fourties, willing to to meet people and have fun (meaning living in a neigbourhood with bars, restaurants and cinemas), and going to work every day near Burnaby Heights park? Thanks again. I owe you a drink upon my arrival.

With a car you are pretty open to most areas. Have a look at Metrotown as the closest. Upper New Westminster. South Granville. You won't have too much luck with furnished places but lots of unfurnished.

Quim: Take a look at cityguide.travel-guides.com/... Another good hint is to find out the price of a Big Mac in two different cities to compare the cost of living. Mac Donald's has the fame of calculating very precisely the prices according to the cost of living of every place. Bona sort a Vancouver!
