what to do in Ushuaia

by bean4bean4 Online Now Jan 19, 2009 at 10:49 AM

I'll be in Ushuaia for about 6 to 8 hours. I'm hesitating between: -making a tour on the Beagle Channel - visiting tierra del fuego ntl park -going to Lapataia bay - saving some time to visit the city -visiting glacier martial on my own (going by taxi) and using the chairlift. what do you suggest?

i'll reduce the options to glaciar and beagle channel for sure... tahts the most amazing things tyou can see... only becasuse you have no much time to stay... and then take a look around to the city... pss: the glaciar in first place... the beagle in second !!! hope i was helpful... Cheers... Nicolas

The Beagle-channel is something that will be done by your cruiseship anyway, BUT if you like to see the birds and seals and the lighttower, it might makes sense to take the tour, your ship will keep some distance. booking on the ship is expensive, BUT you also save a lot of troubles : you are in the security area already and the boats start oppopsite of your ship. For the ordinary cruise you first get a ticket OUTside of the port and then you come back togeather with hundreds of other people and show your ships-pass and your belongings are beeing scanned like at the airport. Most of the ships are reserved by the cruiseships and for the remaining boats you might have to queue ! --- I would suggest the old prison and also the train at the end of the world, it includes a bit of the national park as well ! Lapataia is out of the way and less beautiful than other parts that are close to the train-station.

I would suggest visiting the chocolate shops. A trip to the old jail is also good given you dont have much time. And did I mention the chocolate shops :-)

I second the jail. I second and third the chocolate shops. Since your cruise will go through the channel, you will see much of the same in the Beagle Channel. Only difference is that the cruise liner will keep a bit more distance. Bring a pair of binoculars or a camera with good zoom. I recommend going up to the glacier, coming back seeing the jail museum, then the chocolate shops. Not necessarily in that order...

My vote is for the Martial Glacier too! During our 4 days in Ushuaia, we went to the Glacier twice! Grab a taxi up to the Glacier lodge, just make sure you have one ordered for when you want to go back to the city too! or you can walk back, but it is a few miles and may take a while. Or you can just walk back to the hotel near there and call for a cab. There is a chairlift there (though it wasn't open for us) or you can hike up to the Glacier 30-60minutes that i remember. there is also a trail that goes over to the right side (when facing the mountain), for a great view over the city and beagle channel. I went to Tierra del Fuego too, though it is very nice i still preferred the Glacier for it's views. If you have anytime left, walk around the city and check out the shops. The prison museum only takes about 30-45 minutes for visit.
