Cross-continent itinerary

I have been thinking about crossing South America, from Santiago Chile to Montivideo, Uruguay, with Cordoba, Argentina being the mid-point. I'm pretty independent traveler, my only questin would be about border crossings, what kind of transportation is available, etc. In general, is this a feasible trip? Has anyone done it before? What kind of time frame would you recommend to complete the whole journey? Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
