Airport Delays

by nicolaitan Online Now Mar 19, 2013 at 7:26 PM

i will be flying for the first time since the sequester went into effect, with all the attendant funding decreases. has anyone flown within the last month - are there increased TSA security delays or delays related to decreased staffing by air contol or are there just the usual insufferble delays ( some of the flights involve leaving and returning to new york, including lga )?

The thing with the sequester is not an immediate cutback in all budgets. It really isn't something most people have noticed yet because of the way that it hits the budgets.

We've had more flight delays for bad weather than anything else. Airlines are talking about cutting the number of flights but so far not much has happened. Keep an eye on the weather of you're traveling soon.

I second the comment about the weather. This year has been exceptional for storm activity. Find southern airport transfers. Flights through Miami, Atlanta, Houston, SFO, or LAX are better than connections through Chicago, St. Louis, NYC, DC or Boston, for example. The TSA screening system has improved a lot, so even with the cut backs in personnel, you'll do a lot better than when the program was created a few years back. If you are a US citizen, there's now a fast pass system, a special ID you have to pay and apply for, that gets past TSA and Customs faster....

i know that fed employees really can't be laid off or fired without a due process that takes at a minimum into the middle of april but some of the local papers suggest things have been slower in new york's airports. after all, tours of the white house were suspended only nine or ten days in. flying this weekend and again in two weeks. as for the weather, only supplications to the heavens prevent that sort of problem. glad to know that system wide delays have not developed. la guardia is bad enough in good weather.

I'm at the airport (MCO) as I type this, looking at the security lines. Lines look long for a Wednesday at this time, and the lines were long when we left last Wednesday from IND. 1.5 hours before departure time, you should be okay. But it depends on the airport, day of the week, and time of the year. A lot of families and college students are returning from Spring Break trips right now.

thank you all, doesn't sound like a real catastrophe yet. give it an extra half hour, never a bad idea anyway.

the security lines at lga terminal 3 were absolutely no worse than usual. actually hit a quiet hour and got through relatively quickly.

according to CNN and a WJS newspaper article, the effects of the sequester will begin in mid april. 149 air traffic control towers will be closed ( including one in Maryland less than 4 years old built at a cost of over 5 million dollars ). the worst estimates are for up to 1.5 hour delays at really busy airports like O'Hare, jfk, lax, plus increased waiting time at security and particularly immigration and customs. the best estimates are for only minor changes.
