I'm looking for a big holiday house in Umbria for the month of august. It doesn't have to be luxurious, for us a basic house would be fine, if it is all within our budget. Does anybody know any accomodations in Umbria? grts Lisa
I'm traveling alone to Assisi for three days at the beginning of April and one thing I heard mentioned that sounded wonderful was horseback riding up through the umbrian hills, perhaps to one of the old monestaries or just to see some great views. I've tried to look for places that offer horseback riding but am having a hard time. I've seen a couple that are kind of far outside of assisi (a 20-30 minute drive) and offer trips to their guests, but i'm staying in the heart of assisi and was hoping to find a tour / ride that leaves from the city proper or just outside. any ideas??
I recently posted a photo to my flickr photo stream of the very striking, modern-looking statue on the lawn in front of the upper level of the Basilica di San Francesco. It appears to be a knight (Crusader?) on horse back and can be seen at: flickr.com/photos/kansasexpl... I've been searching the net for further information regarding this work. Can any of my VT friends help me out? Grazie
Road trip! Orvieto is going to be our lunch break from our journer from Rome to Siena. 1. Where to park? Should i take the furnicular or the escalator? Which would bring me closest to the town center. 2. Anyone want to suggest a nice italian familia bistro for lunch? We dont eat meat. so somewhere with loads of vegetarian and seafood option? While im at it...should i or shouldnt i visit the underground in orvieto? how long would that take?
Hi, Which Umbria travel guide would you recommend? Last years I used Blue Guide of Tuscany and Northern Italy, but Umbria is out of stock. Thank you very much
I will be arriving in Rome and plan to take a train to Citta di Castello. It appears I can either travel to Arezzo directly or to Perugia with a train change or two. It appears the Rome/Arezzo route is the most direct, however, I am not sure how to get from Arezzo to Citta di Castello? Would it be better to go to Perugia? Any advice is welcome. Grazie!
Is there a bus from Venice to Perugia? Train looks complicated!

Hi I am looking for a cheap sublet in Perugia near the Universita' per stranieri for this month of July, 2 weeks from 18 to 31 (more or less). I am an Italian teacher 33 yrs old non-smoker, coming for a teachers course. My boyfriend may join me so the ideal would be a single room for two or a studio apartment. Anyone? We also would like to exchange our flat in Tel Aviv for the same period! Grazie Laura
I will be in Assisi on the 2nd of August. I have been reading online that the Celebration of Pardon is held in the Basilica Santa Maria Degli Angeli on that day. Is it a big celebration that will draw huge crowds? Regards, Stevie
I just checked the weather forecasts and i freaked out!! Seems that umbria and toscana will be cold still next week!! I planned to pack summerclothes and sandals!! Could it be that wrong?? We will be touring umbria and toscana for the next 10 days....
Hi I was planning my trip to umbria and wanted to go after spending a night in spoletto to gubbio via assisi that i suppose is a must-go. I was told that bevagna and spello are a very nice and more convenient alternative to gubbio, considering that our next stop will be perugia and that we dont feel like being in the car for many hours. Is it true? Or gubbio is a definite must? thanx ps -Perugia. Is one day enough??
My fiance LOVES CHEESE!!! We are going to Assisi for part of our honeymoon and I would really like to surprise him by taking him on a cheese tasting tour or to a restaurant/store that allows cheese tasting. Do you have any ideas? Thank you!!
We plan to go to Assisi from Ancona but the Trenitalia online schedule only shows two trains from Foligno/day - 1 at 15:15 at 1 at 21:54. I don't want to spend hours waiting in Foligno for a 10 minute ride to Assisi. Should I plan to catch a taxi or is the schedule inaccurate?
What is the best way to pre-purchase a ticket from Firenze to Assisi before leaving the US? I have a few days after Euromeet and I will be coming back to the US from Munich. I thought I could run down and stay a few days in Firenze (Florence), and take a side trip to Assisi, which appears to be around three hours away. I tried test purchasing a ticket from Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato, and got back 'solution not purchaseable'. It looks like I can book Munich to Firenze using the Die Bahn site. I want to keep to rail in case the volcano acts up. What is the best way to buy the ticket from Firenze to Assisi? I know this next question depends on my taste - but would you do Firenze - Assisi, or Firenze - Perugia?
Planning 4 to 5 day visit in region, wishing to visit Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, perhaps Cortona, Montepulciano in early October. Will be using public transportation only. Seeking recommendations for a single home base for that time. We're active, healthy seniors who prefer B&Bs or albergos with local charm and ambiance to expensive hotels.
Hi, We will be in Orvieto this June for a day visit, could you please tell us about a safe parking where we could leave the car with all our luggage? I´m a bit worried about this as we are not staying in a hotel we just want to walk and relax in the city. Appreciate your help.
I've read some differing opinions on the best way to get from Rome to Assisi. One suggestion was to NOT take the train into Rome and then out from there, instead going straight out on the train to Orte. Having never been to Italy at all, I have no idea but I'm looking for the simplest way. All advice is appreciated.
PLEASE HELP!! I HAVE LIMITED TIME TO ORGANIZE A 8-DAY TOUR AROUND UMBRIA AND TUSCANY. EXCLUDING FLORENCE, THAT WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN TO, WHAT TO SEE, WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO STAY?? THANX PS-I REALIZE 8 DAYS IS NOTHING. SIENNA, LUCCA, PERUGIA AND ASSISI I THINK ARE MUST DOS. WHAT ABOUT THE BEATIFUL VILLAGES OF THE COUNTRYSIDE?? THIS IS WHAT I NEED UR HELP FOR..
I will be staying in Todi this April (2010), and will not have a car. I want to spend a day going over to Orvieto, and another day going to Perugia - but I don't want to spend hours on a train for such a short distance! Any suggestions? Thank you for any advice! Also, for others looking for lodging, I booked my room at one of the monasteries in Todi - right in town, very reasonable. I will post my experience there when I return. Booked the room through monasterystays.com - they arrange lodging in many different cities. Should be interesting!
We have only two days (three nights) in Perugia and I would like some reasons why one of those days should be spent on the train to travel to Assisi. I am not religious and I have see some fabulous cathedrals etc. in the past. traveling with Aloha the coconut wireless
I will be traveling to Assisi in May, and need to make a reservation at the Grand Hotel Assisi. Their on-line booking is not working, and I cannot get a reply to any email. The telephone number is 39 075 8150, but I think there are missing digits, as my phone call from the US is not going through. Can anyone help me find the complete phone number to call the hotel?
My husband and I will be traveling to Italy this summer, traveling primarily in Umbria. We will be staying in Orvieto and Trevi and will explore the areas surrounding these two towns. We also plan to take a couple of day trips to Rome. My question is this: are both Visa and MasterCard generally accepted in Umbria? On a previous trip to Switzerland we found that MasterCard was accepted more often than Visa, particularly at food markets. I'm trying to decide if I should have one of each card to make sure we don't have any problems. Mary
Just bought an IPod Touch and thought I might be able to use it in Italy while traveling. Anyone had experience with using Wi Fi Hot Spots (free) in Perugia? traveling with Aloha the coconut wireless
We are planning a trip to Orvieto in Aug of this year. I cant seem to get good communication from the Hotel we will be staying at. My question is from the Orvieto train station will we be able to get a bus or taxi that can take us to la badia. First time travelers to Italy. Also is there a place at train station where we secure our luggage. Thank you in advance for any help.
I have seen on a couple of different websites that there is a bus everyday form assisi to sorrento, but that is all that is says. Does anyone know where in assisi do you catch this bus, schedule, how much it costs, and how long it takes? Thanks. Jess
