I'm in the process of planning a trip to Umbria with my mother and the main problem is that we have an extremely limited time there - only 7 days - and we must squeeze in a visit with friends too!
The itinerary is as follows so far:
- Arrive into Pisa and transfer by public transport to Siena. This seems relatively straightforward from what I can see.
- Planning to spend 3 nights in Siena (Albergo Bernini Hotel has caught my fancy.) We will have a day and a half to wander the town and then on the 3rd day we're considering a day out with 'Tours by Roberto' which seems to have excellent reviews. This will give us an opportunity to see a fair chunk of the countryside and an opportunity for some wine tasting and eating with someone else doing the driving and guiding...
Now, normally I don't go in for 'tours' as such but time is limited, there is much to see but this is also a holiday. Also, on this occasion I am travelling with my mum who is 69 years old and I'm trying to keep the itinerary at a non-exhaustive level for her. A couple of reasonably-priced good day-tours in each area would be perfect.
- After Siena, we want to transfer to Assisi for a night (probably Hotel Berti) but I'm struggling to find how long it will take to get there by public transport. Can anyone help?
Whilst here, we are wondering if there are any recommended tours that can take us out for a day around this area. Does anyone have any ideas?
- From Assisi we will transfer to Orvieto (Locanda Rosati where we've stayed before) for 2 nights. How do we get from Assisi to Orvieto by public transport and does anyone know how long it will take?
We'll be planning to spend one day in Orvieto and Todi and another day out in the countryside. We were going to hire a car for this day if we couldn't find a suitable tour and drive around the locality before relocating to Tarquinia to spend our last 2 nights with friends who live there.
So, we are trying to limit the car hire to maybe 2 days from Orvieto and the surrounds to Civitavecchia from where our friends will collect us. But it is looking like we may need to hire it from Assisi instead. We would prefer to not have to hire one at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions to alleviate the travel side of things? Or any other ideas?
Thanks once again for your help :-)
We are traveling to Umbria for 3 days from 5/24 to 5/27. We will be staying in Gubbio. Could anyone make some possible suggestions as to what to see in Umbria. We do have a car. I was thinking Assisi, Spello and Perugia. Any recommendations on must sees?
(Sorry for the first post. Hit send too soon.)
I will be living in Perugia for the next 5 months. Can anyone recommend an affordable gym which I could join preferably as close to the city centre as possible?
I am also looking for a good yoga studio if anyone has any suggestions?
Hi) Me and my school friend plan to spend 5 days in Perugia 25- 29th of May on a way to Bergamo Euromeet. As a part of Euromeet we plan to visit Pallio della balestra in Gubbio on 27th, in addition- Assisi, Spello and, may be, Orvieto. So I have some questions:
1. Could anybody recommend me nice place to dine: something with live music, informal and vivid atmosphere: we aren't interested in night life, just pleasant place to spend evening without risky adventures:-)
2. As I've read here, on VT, that Monday is the day of "closed doors" in Italy, is it worth to visit Assisi on Monday, or some of sights will be closed and we should better go somethere else? (we won't hire a car and will travel by public transport).
3. On the page of Perugia here there is a "Con" tip that Perugia is unsafe place with a lot of criminality. We stay a bit far from the centre: in Etruscan Chocotel, is it safe to walk at evenings (for example going to the hotel from the dinner at restaurant in old town) for 2 mid-aged ladies? Or there are special unsafe places, which aren't recommended to visit?
Thank you in advance, regards, Elena
We are visiting Orvieto this year flying into Venice for a few days first can we get a train direct to Orvieto and how much would it be. I have tried looking on line for a time table but had no luck so if you can tell me a web site to look at.
can you please tell me whether there are buses from citta di castello to arezzo?
I am looking to rent holiday accommodation for 4-5 weeks during the Summer in Umbria. We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children aged 3 and 6). We are anxious to avoid large groups of partying tourists, so want to find somewhere quiet with all the amenities a family needs (restaurants, shops, activities, swimming, etc) but probably not on a 'holiday complex'/holiday village. We would probably need a 3 bedroom facility and are happy to rent it from a local owner so that the money goes straight to them.
Can you direct me to any websites or listings where I might be able to view available property of this type in the Umbria?
Many thanks in advance.
Dear VT'ers, I last visited Perugia in 1980, when I visited the Massinis, I would like to return this year, as I'm staying in Florence (Firenze).
This time I travel with a friend and I would like to show her the sights, I remember the aqueduct, St Pietro's Church, the main square, and I would like some advice about other sights to show, we like architecture, history, and a couple of hours walking tour would be a bonus.
Can anyone suggest a good itinery, and maybe some good places to enjoy coffee, lunch.
Grazie (many thanks)
I'm coming by train from Rome to Orvieto but my final destination is Todi. Can I get a taxi in Orvieto to take me to Todi? If so, where do I get it and does anyone know the approximately cost?
We are looking to have a week somewhere in Umbria next June. We have been recommended to Spello. I would appreciate some other travellers thoughts on this as a base or perhaps somewhere a little larger for more nightlife, such as bars/restaurants. Would Spoleto be just as beautiful but a little larger? Thanks so much.
I am wondering if anyone has stayed at CasaVera in Orvieto in the Primula room? When I look at the pictures on their site it seems like there is only one bed. We are looking for 2 single beds. Thanks for any info anyone has on this place!!
Anyone been during November? I am trying to decide whether to stay in Orvieto for 2 weeks or Lucca. Any and all suggestions and comments welcome.
Hello, I will be staying in assisi for two nights, mid october this year, I will head down to l'aquila from there. Anyone know if there is a bus from assisi to l'aquila?

We (family of 3 with a 18 month old) are planing a 2 night stop in Perugia and have started looking at hotels. We are arriving by car.
We've narrowed it down to these three, and were wondering if anyone had any feedback on any of them. Any experience or information would be appreciated.
* Primavera Mini Hotel
* Hotel Fortuna
* Hotel Bonazzi
We are trying to make reservations for the Rezidenza di via Piccardi in Gubbio in Umbria for late September. We have gone to the website but find no way to book online. Anybody know a way? Or other suggestions for Gubbio?
I'd like to plan a weekend in Bevagna (near Perugia). Do someone give me some information about this location and do you know hotels or bed and breakfast with swimming pool and some place where to eat? It seems that Bevagna is one of the most beautiful medieval village in Italy, is it true?
Does anyone know the hotel clittuna?
Is there bus transportation between Perugia and Milano? If so, where can I pick up it in Perugia), Ineed to travel June 5th, 2011
I'm looking for a big holiday house in Umbria for the month of august.
It doesn't have to be luxurious, for us a basic house would be fine,
if it is all within our budget.
Does anybody know any accomodations in Umbria?
I'm traveling alone to Assisi for three days at the beginning of April and one thing I heard mentioned that sounded wonderful was horseback riding up through the umbrian hills, perhaps to one of the old monestaries or just to see some great views. I've tried to look for places that offer horseback riding but am having a hard time. I've seen a couple that are kind of far outside of assisi (a 20-30 minute drive) and offer trips to their guests, but i'm staying in the heart of assisi and was hoping to find a tour / ride that leaves from the city proper or just outside. any ideas??
I recently posted a photo to my flickr photo stream of the very striking, modern-looking statue on the lawn in front of the upper level of the Basilica di San Francesco. It appears to be a knight (Crusader?) on horse back and can be seen at: flickr.com/photos/kansasexpl...
I've been searching the net for further information regarding this work. Can any of my VT friends help me out? Grazie
Road trip! Orvieto is going to be our lunch break from our journer from Rome to Siena.
1. Where to park? Should i take the furnicular or the escalator? Which would bring me closest to the town center.
2. Anyone want to suggest a nice italian familia bistro for lunch? We dont eat meat. so somewhere with loads of vegetarian and seafood option?
While im at it...should i or shouldnt i visit the underground in orvieto? how long would that take?
Which Umbria travel guide would you recommend? Last years I used Blue Guide of Tuscany and Northern Italy, but Umbria is out of stock.
Thank you very much
I will be arriving in Rome and plan to take a train to Citta di Castello. It appears I can either travel to Arezzo directly or to Perugia with a train change or two. It appears the Rome/Arezzo route is the most direct, however, I am not sure how to get from Arezzo to Citta di Castello? Would it be better to go to Perugia? Any advice is welcome. Grazie!
Is there a bus from Venice to Perugia? Train looks complicated!
