What do you recommend for 2 days at Uluru-Kata. We are arriving at mid day may 19 and leaving 2;30 PM the 21. We are a group of 6 , one young adult, a 75 years lady and 2 couples in their late 40. We are going to rent a car at the air port . Thanks Wmde

Are you flying in to Alice Springs or Uluru for a start? I forgot to look at your profile to see where you are from?

Are you staying in Yulara? From there you can drive around Uluru (Ayres Rock) at sunset on your first day (you should get settled in to your hotel by 4pm - plenty of time) and at sunrise on your second day. There are plenty of pull-ins if you want to stop your car and have a walk and the visitor centre is good for refreshments too. If you finish there by about 11am you can then get to Kata Tjuta by noon. I actually found Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) more inspiring - there's a great walk through the Valley of the Winds and the scenery is stunning (is your 75 year old a fit walker?) - good for a picnic too. You might want to stay there for sunset too. See environment.gov.au/parks/ulu...

All the resorts there have a full program of activities and things to do. You can certainly get to the rock, view it, have a BBQ in the area etc. You will not be dissapointed

We spent about the same amount of time at Uluru. The first evening you could visit the sunset viewing area. The next morning visit Talinguru Nyakunytjaku (the new sunrise viewing area), stop by the Cultural Center and do the Mala Walk to Kantju Gorge. In the afternoon drive to Kata Tjuta (Olga Mountains), hike to the Valley of the Winds, and watch the sunset from the viewing area near the parking lot. On the last morning you could hike into the Mutitjulu Waterhole on the Kuniya Walk and walk part of the base trail.

One advantage of a 3D/2N package with tours (which I did) is that you get the relevant narration and explanations of the sights that you see. Otherwise, like a young woman in Sydney said of Ayer's Rock: "it's just a rock" and "there's nothing there", otherwise! ;-) With such narration/explanatory notes on every nook and crevice on the famed rock, I began to see the meaning and significance of everything to the local aborigines - it all made sense! So much so that I was enchanted by "the rock"! If you see my Uluru pages you might appreciate what I mean.. Yes, appearance-wise, the Olgas may look more interesting. But aboriginal culture/story-telling wise, Uluru took so much more meaning, at least to me! :-)
