Hi everyone :) I'm travelling to Australia with my mum and sister in January. Me an my mum have both been to Uluru before but my sister haven't so we would like to show her some of the real Australian dessert and Uluru. We are short on time, and we are having trouble finding a tour that would either depart from Uluru and finish in Alice spring or reverse without it beeing an AAT kings tour and not being much longer than 2 or 3 days. We would like to get to see as much as possible and not sit in a bus the intire time, but would rather not join one of the backpacker tours. We have considered flying in tho Uluru and then on our own do the basewalk and then watch the sunset, and then on our way back join a tour that lets us see the sunrise and Kings Canyon and then finishes in Alice Springs. Would it be easier to everything on our own or do you have any suggestions for tour companies we might join? Neither of us have a drivers license so self drive is not an option :) Any suggestions would be very helpful! Thanks!
Suggest you contact Australia Travel Specialists at www.atstravel.com.au/ to tailor make an itinerary for you? I used them from Sydney in 2008 over Xmas and they were great!

Lillian, when I went to the Alice Springs Virtualtourist meet and survivor camp in Aug 2010, we traveled in the Alice Springs area extensively. We did almost all the driving ourselves; however, we did take the "Discover a Town Like Alice" tour by Tailormade Tours (joomla.tailormadetours.com.a...). It was excellent and reasonably priced. I know that they have several other tours in the area. If they are as good as the one we took, you will not be disappointed.

In 2007 I had a fabulous trip to Uluru/etc through Annie's Place ( a hostel out of Alice Springs ). They call their tours 'Mulga's Adventures'. I didn't think of it as a backpackers tour at the time... but perhaps it was. I liked it though because my husband and I were 29 and 32 years old respectively and we weren't the oldest people on the tour. I enjoyed the tour a great deal, and our tourguide (nickname Krusty) was one of the best I've had anywhere. We visited Uluru, camped out overnight two nights 'outback' and also hiked a great deal in Kings Canyon, etc. If you are interested in having a look at what they offer, here are the links: anniesplacebackpackers.com/#... For me, it was an absolute highlight of my entire 3 week trip in Australia, if that is any endorsement. :-) Yes, there is time spent on the bus driving about, but that was time spent getting to know other travelers from all around the world. For me, a great experience. Best of luck t you in your planning and travels! Cheers!

Thanks for the replies, i will look at the websites and see if there's anything there :) And i do know there's a great deal of driving to and from Uluru, it just seemed like, with the tours that we had been looking at, that it was mostly driving around the rock too and not as much walking, witch we would prefer :)

Have a look if this tour suits your needs: wayoutback.com.au/Tours/3-Da... I can highly recommend the company, I did the five day tour and it was fantastic! It really is not a backpacker tour, there were people of all ages in our group (from 18 to 60) - one reason of course is that the price is quite high compared to other tours, but I think it is worth it.
