by ksafinuk Online Now May 2, 2009 at 11:51 AM

We are bringing a family of 5 (kids 9,11,13) to ayers rock Jan 2 from perth - Jan 5 to the east coast. We will be tenting at the campsite - does anyone have advise on either the camping conditions and/or the best things to do?

The camping area is great. The area where you stay has a road around it.Like a circle. You have the main accommodation and shopping area at one spot, then you walk around to the camping ground, then after that there is the petrol station and then another accommodation place, more of a backpacker place. It's all within walking distance, not big at all. There is a supermarket, cafe's and newsagent, plus a few shops at the little village area. When you stay there you are allowed to use all the other facilities at the other accommodation places. The main one that is used is the swimming pool at the Sails Resort( can't miss this:)) There is also a swimming pool at the camping area. You have to drive to the bigt Rock, this is in the National Park area, this closes at dusk, after the sunset viewing of the Rock and opens again in the morning for the sunrise at the Rock. It's an easy drive and all headlights will be heading there of a morning:) I highly recommend that you hire a car. It's an easy drive and you can do the sunrise and then head to the Olga's etc. You pay an entrance fee the first day, then that is good for 3 days ( I think it's 3 days, anyway plenty of time to see all) The Aborigine guided tour is great, very interesting and the kids would enjoy this. Plus there is the Cultlure centre, this also is great and it's easy to find. They have a cafe there so you can have a cuppa etc. There are short walks at the Olga's, at that time of year it's going to be hot so remember to take plenty of water with you, plus, sunhat, sunscreen etc. Something I really, really enjoyed and always highly recommend is the Sound of Silence dinner. This is held each night. You book and you then are picked up by coash, they then take you off into the *bush* :) and you see the sunset over the Rock, this is from a distance ( so do the close up one as well:)) You then have dinner, drinks and a talk on the stars. It's a great night and I am sure the kids would enjoy it as well. You won't have any trouble filling in the days you are there. I love it, I have been a couple of times and wouldn't hesitate going back again. Have fun Anne

Well Anne has covered it all, really! Just wanted to second her opinion that the camping facilities are great. I've stayed in the camping ground before too. You'll have a great time there... a fantastic place for a family holiday. Like no other in the world!

Thank you for all the information - it will be very useful. I have only 1 question (at this time) - we heard about sunset/ sunrise camel rides at Ayers Rock. What can you tell me about them?

To be honest I haven't seen any camel rides at the Rock. There are plane rides over the Rock and surrounding areas for sunrise and sunset. I Have done one of these and enjoyed it, but I love anything like that. Also I have done a Harley bike ride around the area, finishing at the Rock for Sunset. Someone else may have info on this, or just google and it may come up with info.
