Rail

by robmar46 Online Now Dec 31, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Hi. Am trying to find information to travel by train from Ulm to Erbach an der Donau, where some of my ancestors migrated to Australia from.

Could you please point me in the right direction for timetables and ticket prices, all preferably in English?

Thanks

Rob Marshall

Easiest is to check out with Deutsche Bahn. Link the the English website is:

    bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/...

You will find timetable and ticket prices here.

    Or more directly, reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu...
Selecting Ulm Hbf and Erbach (Donau) Bahnhof, it changes this to Erbach (Württ) anyway. It's only 8-10 minutes away so it can't be expensive, but curiously DB says "fares not available" (for me at least).

    DB timetable
    reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu...
    From: Ulm Hbf
    To: Erbach(Württ)

This is a trip inside the DING local public transport network. Thus the DING tariff applies, which is not shown by the DB timetable.

DING Erbach and surroundings full network

There is also a bus (#21) from Ulm Hbf to Erbach. Will be a lot slower than a RE train. The DING tickets cover both (they cover all types of local public transport) inside the zones they are bought for.

Single ticket Ulm - Erbach is EUR 2,85. Day ticket is EUR 5,70.

Abalada has given you all the necessary links.

Let me just add: The distance is only 10 to 12 km. A single ticket for the train costs 2.85 Euro. If you want to make more than a return trip on this day it is best you buy a day ticket for 5.70 Euro.

The trains do not run very frequently, roughly about one per hour.

The normal way from Ulm to Erbach is by car for most people as there is a direct route through the valley of the Danube.

I can give you more information about Erbach if you need. When I go to Germany once a year I still visit my dentist there, and my best friend works in Erbach.
