The train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar

by happyhourkid Online Now Sep 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

Hey all,

I'm booked on this train in October. I believe I'm riding on the Mongolian Train (I guess there's also a Chinese train and a Russian train). Has anyone else ridden on this train? If so I have 2 questions and some sub-questions:

1. Does this train make any stops along the way besides the change of gauge stop in Erenhot? If so, which other towns does it stop in? Is it possible to exit the train when it makes these stops (even just to walk along the platform)?

2. Does anyone have any recommendations to make the 30+ hour ride more fun, comfortable, etc? Everytime I read a forum it only says to bring instant noodles and playing cards. I need a wider spectrum that that!

Thanks everyone,

Chris

    a) Yes, the train does stop at many stations and you can take a stroll. Most important station (for you) is Datong. In the fact, it's so important, you may (and better!) to decide to leave the train and spend few days there. You can continue with the same ticket, just buy new reservation at the international counter in Datong - CITS should help you.

    b) i's actually Erlian where the change of the gauge happens. It's not pronounced Erenhot.

    c) We made some pictures, ate in dining car, etc. - all the way from Moscow and we did it 6 times. There are many people on the train, it is not boring.

    d) Unless you know the day precisely, you never know, what (Chinese or Mongolian) train you are riding. There could be even a Russian car on the Chinese train going to "Hohhot" (Ho-he-hao-te). Too bad, the agencies are not always familiar with the tickets... On the 2nd class there is little if any difference between Chinese, Mongolian or Russian cars: all are made in Germany.

Thanks for the tip about Datong.

What I'm actually wondering is if on the train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar where the train stops. Most specifically, does it make an actual stop in Zamyn-Uud and Choir, Mongolia, even for just a few moments.

And by the way, Erenhot apparently is the Mongolian pronunciation (the city is in Inner Mongolia, after all), and Erlian is the Chinese pronunciation, so we are both correct. : )
