Moving to Jinja

I am moving to Jinja for about 6 months next to do HIV education. I'm just after some general information about the weather, things to do and ex-pat places to visit (in case I get homesick!) As I am a female in my 20's going alone, I am also a little concerned about safety so any info would help. And to top it off, can anyone offer the cheapest way to get to Uganda from Australia. Any info would be priceless!
