If you had a choice of spending several months during autumn and winter either in Izmir or in Ankara: I haven't been there yet so I can only compare them by statistical climate data, but I'd like to hear from those who have actually been there in autumn/winter and have used local transportation, sports/fitness facilities, bars and restaurants, nightlife? Which city do you find to be more interesting, pleasant and why, especially for younger people? Thank you!
Hi ;-) Ankara is never pleasant, and would be a real bad choice for winter :-/ Izmir is nothing great, but if you have only this two options, go for Izmir. Max ;-)

Ankara is bitterly cold in the winter. I spend quite some time there and snow is very common during winter. The city has a very vibrant student life though and a very good cafe scene. I had a turkish girlfriend a few years ago who went to Bilkent university and there was really a good vibe there. Izmir is probaply the most livable big city in Turkey though and i would really recommend it. The climate is also nicer there and you should have pretty decnet weather there most of the time. Mabye that is why my turkish ex lives there today :)

I will go with Izmir without hesitation. The city with its climate, nature, people and other parameters way better than Ankara. You can check my Izmir page for some tips.

110% Izmir of course, most of the highlights of Turkey are in or around Izmir province. Been around Turkey just like most of the people who answered above - from Istanbul to Trabzon, but never thought about going to Ankara. Probably I'll make a stop-over but not spend more than a day, soon.
