Turkey Summer Trip

by greenska89 Online Now Jul 1, 2012 at 1:33 AM

Hi there, For this coming Summer Vacation.. i had planned to travel to Turkey. I would like to go to some places likes Istanbul,Cappadocia,Pamukkale,Ephesus,Antalya and Fethiye. My plan is that i firstly arrive at Istanbul. Then i will go to Pamukkale. At Pamukkale..I think i will do day Trips to Fethiye and Antalya. Then i will proceed to Cappadocia. My Questions are; 1) From where is the best place to go to Ephesus..Pamukkale or Istanbul or there is another place more convenient to go to Ephesus? 2) Is it a good idea to stay at Pamukkale and do day trips? 3) I think all six places seem interesting for me.but i need your opinion..where should i stay longer and where should i not. 4)Is it more easier and more choices to travel from pamukkale to Cappadocia or from Cappadocia to Pamukkale? Thanks in Advance for your kind replies.

How long are you going for? Turkey is a massive country with lots to see and do. On my opinion, Cappadocia needs at least 4 days. Pamukkale is a must see, (overnight) but not an ideal point for day trips. Of the places you have listed, Ephesus can be reached from Pamukkale.

You don't say how long you'll be staying and how you'll be travelling (plane? bus? car?). The places you list are quite far apart. If I were doing this trip, I'd do Istanbul => Ephesus (fly or overnight bus to Izmir, Izmir => Selcuk by bus) Ephesus => Pamukkale (bus, 3-4 hours) Pamukkale => Fetiye (bus, I'd guess 4-5 hours) Fetiye => Antalya (I heard the bus is ~6 hours) Antalya => Cappadocia (bus, ~10 hours overnight, or fly) Cappadocia => Istanbul (bus, ~12 hours overnight, or fly) There's no point to going to Fetiye or Antalya as day trips from Pamukkale - too far, and in Antalya, at least, there's a lot to see. I know there are lots of day trips from Antalya to Pamukkale - just be careful because most of them include long stops for lunch and at crafts stores, with only a couple of hours at most in Pamukkale itself. There are good connections from Pamukkale (actually, from Denizli, about 20 minutes away) - a regional airport and buses. Between Denizli and Cappadocia, I think the bus would take over 12 hours. If I recall, direct flights between the two would be limited.

I spent fabulous holidays in a program that may suit your needs. I bought a two weeks package flying to Izmir and returning from istanbul. After a week spent in the beach of Cesme, we used the other one visiting Selçuk, Ephesus, Pamukkale (overnight), Konia, Cappadocia (two nights), Ankara (overnight), and two final nights in Istanbul. Replacing the windy Cesme by Antalia, from where you may visit Fethiye, that could be your program. Tourism in Turkey is very well organized, and they use to be reliable and efficient. Remember that places are distant, and using public transport, you risk to waste most of your time. Check your agency.

I would second Taylor's suggested itinerary above, that's how I would also do it (in fact I did it albeit in two separate occassions). Or you may also do it the other way around, start with Istanbul and fly or overnight bus (long trip) to Cappadocia - Goreme town as base, then crawl your way down to Antalya - Fethiye - Ephesus (base yourself in Selcuk) - daytrip to Pamukkale - and back to Istanbul from Selcuk either by overnight bus or flight from Izmir airport.
