Rain in Istanbul :(

by Apak Online Now May 25, 2012 at 6:27 AM

We'll be in Istanbul this upcoming week and it is forecasted to rain a few of the days. Any tips on what to do on a rainy day in Istanbul? We are staying in the Sultanahmet area.

Actually, a lot of the interesting things to see are indoors, and, if it's raining, it just gives you an excuse to spend more time looking around. Museums: Archaeological Museum, Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. I heard that the Museum of Modern Art is very good too, although I didn't get there myself. Parts of the Topkapi Museum are indoors, as are the Harem rooms. Grand Bazaar Kariye Camii/Chora Museum (this could be up to a half-day visit, depending on how you get there). Of course Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, but try to see the Rustem Pasa mosque too. It's in the (mostly-covered) Spice Bazaar. Try a Turkish bath. (The ones in the Sultanahmet area are expensive - full-on spas - but if you're going to ever try it, might as well be here. There's one nearby that made the 1,000 Things to See/Do Before You Die list, and it's gorgeous.) Stop in to see Little Hagia (down the road from the Blue Mosque), and have tea in the courtyard with the covered walk, maybe chat with the artists who make and sell things there. (I'm thinking specifically of a few people who do miniatures and calligraphy - very interesting.) The Basilica Cistern, if you want a bit of something eerie. Those are just the better-known indoor highlights, and barely even get you out of Sultanahmet. I was in Istanbul (also staying in Sultanahmet) for a couple of weeks, with rain perhaps half the time, and was never at a loss for things to do. Hint: if you'll have a good three days of rain in a row, get a 72 hour museum pass (for 72 Lira) from the van just outside the Hagia Sophia entrance. It'll get you into: Chora Museum, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Museum and Harem rooms, Archaeoloical Museum, and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. Those will more than fill up three days.

Tayloretc has given you a good list of things to see indoors. And there is no reason why you cannot walk and enjoy the city even if it is raining. When I was in Istanbul it rained most days, and it was chilly. I had no problems whatsoever in finding things to do (in fact, I did not have time to do all the things I wanted to do). Pack appropriate clothes and you'll be fine. After all, you will neither shrink nor rust! :-)

Just bring an umbrella - buy one at TL5 - and jackets, and you'll be fine. When i was there last month, it was raining and really chilly, I told my friends we've to start the tour while it was raining -- I thought there will be less tourists lining up the sights -- to the basilica cistern and was disappointed to find the long queue with their umbrellas and ponchos.
