TDP in end of August/beginning of September - need some advices

by aczibordi Online Now Apr 1, 2010 at 6:04 AM

Hi friedns,

I plan staying in TDP park from Aug 30 until Sep 3, so almost end of winter...

I'm very worried what we can and can not do during this time. So I put some question below:

1 - Can I do the whole W trail during these 5 days?
2 - Is the weather supportable?
3 - What am I supposed to bring? what kind of shoes, clothes, etc?
4 - Will the "Refugios" be opened? How can I contact them?
5 - Does the ferry on lake Grey work?
6 - Do you have contact info of Park administration?
7 - How long does the day (sun light) last this period?

Thanks a lot for the help.

Best regards,

Alexandre

    1. It depends how much snow has accumulated at altitude during the winter. If the paths are clear you could do it in 5 days if you have experience in that sort of trail in winter conditions. The good news is there is less wind at that time of year.
    2. There is no bad weather, just the wrong clothes. If you have the right gear, yes.
    3. See below.
    4. Not all. They usually open later in the year. Paine Grande does not shut. You book them through either of these two companies. Contact them.

I also plan to go to the TdP W Trail, but in november. Question, the refugios have to be booked in advance? The campsites are they free?

There are a couple of free campsites but they have virtually no facilities. If you want one of the campsites next to the refugios, you pay. You can either reserve a place (plus a set up tent and sleeping bags if you want) or plan on arriving early. In November there would not be as many people, but TdP gets more popular every year. You can have your meals in the refugios if you let them know early in the day.
