Hello, I am trying to figure out whether it makes more sense to book my first night in Toronto at an airport hotel or at a downtown hotel. Our group of 4 is flying from California and will be arriving at 9:30pm on a weekday. We will not be checking luggage, so I am going to say that it will take us an hour to get through customs. If we are travelling by public transport (because we are on a limited budget and won't be renting a car) would it be safe to use that to travel to downtown at around 10:30pm or so? I am guessing that it will take an hour or so, making hotel arrival at 11:30pm, which shouldn't be too bad since that is still early for us west-coast time. I am just concerned about orienting myself to walking in the correct direction, etc. in the dark. However, staying at an airport hotel would almost "waste" that night. So, the things I would know are: 1. Would it be better to stay at the airport or downtown? 2. Any suggestions for airport/downtown hotel near subway that is moderately priced ($80-$120)? 3. Are my time estimates for customs/transit about right? 4. Do you think that travelling at night would be safe on public transit with luggage, etc.? 5. If it is preferable to stay at an airport hotel, what is there to do in the area without public transport so that we don't waste that day? Are the islands accessible from there? Any other suggestions about Toronto would be appreciated, including restaurant suggestions. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hello Everyone ! My bf and I are travelling to Mexico in June with 12h stopover in Toronto. We are landing there around 9pm on Sunday and we were wondering what should we see during those hours. It's at night so it's kind off hard to know where to go apart from clubs etc. I know Toronto has an amazing skyline, could you give me any tips where should we be heading to make the most out of those 12h? also how the transport works there? Is there a good transport between the airports and the city center? Hopefully it's even worth going out, I'm not looking forward to spend 12h on the airport...
Hello All, I am planning a long weekend in Toronto in June (14th-17th). The main attraction for me is the Blue Jays/Phillies games this particular weekend. I already have tickets for the Friday night, and Saturday afternoon games. I would like some suggestions on where to stay. Somewhere not too far from the stadium, but somewhere relatively close to downtown. I'll have my 76 year old mother with me. She's in great shape, can walk fine, but I don't want her (or me) to have to treck a mile to the ball park. Price range would be anything lower than 170 per night (give or take) I'm also interested in doing a little exploring of the city, so any suggestions for this would be greatly appreciated. I am interested in the Distillery Ditrict, St. Lawrence Market, and I definately have to get to the Hard Rock Cafe while I'm in Toronto. Other than that I really don't know what to see, or what is within walking distance. Thanks in advance! Todd
hi...was on my way to las vegas yesterday but security at pearson airport denied me entry to the US because they said i had a drug conviction 32 years ago which resulted in a100 fine. Hi all! My husband and I will be visiting Toronto for 2 days/3 nights In late July and only know we want to go to Niagara Falls one of the days. Toronto has sooooo much to offer that I can't even begin figuring out where to stay or what to do on our other day. We like B&Bs (as long as they have a bathroom in our room) and hotels that don't cost an arm and a leg (I'm an Accountant). We aren't really into a lot of outdoorsy kind of things and I can only handle so much museum gazing. But we love an adventure and seeing new and exciting places. We live in San Diego, CA, and I grew up on Maui so we won't go to any beaches. What kind of tomfoolery can you come up with for us????
Hello Friends!! I would like to undertake a train journey from Edmonton,AB to Toronto,ON next week, i.e. end of January 2012. I'm on a budget travel and would like some info on this train route. I plan to travel ECONOMY CLASS as i cannot afford anything better now...lol 1) How comfortable are the seats and the coach facilities (toilets, etc) for this 03 nights, 02 days journey to Toronto. 2) It says, meals not included in the economy class ticket. So, can i still buy my choice of dinners & breakfasts in the dining car? OR is the facility in the dining car exclusive for sleeper class travelers? 3) What is the quality of meals on-board; are there any good take-away food options @ VIA stations in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, etc. 4) How cold is it inside the coaches during nights? Just to let you know, its freezing out here in Edmonton now with temp. reading -32C 5) Is there any entertainment option in economy class or electric sockets for my laptop? 6) Do they offer any discounts for the "Hosteling International"(HI) members? If you guys can clarify my doubts, that would be great. Thank you for the help. I look forward to this winter adventure across Canada. Cheers, ciao!!
Hello fellow Vters! Im planning to visit Toronto on March to get a US visa and I'm thinking of staying in Best Western Plus Travel Hotel located at 5503 Eglinton Ave W. Do you think it's hard for me to go to the US embassy from this hotel. Or it's better to stay in Downtown Toronto? I will be arriving on March 10 evening from Winnipeg. March 11 - CN tower, old and new cityhall, flatiron building then before dusk heading to Niagara falls. (Is there any bus going to Niagara falls at this time and how about the return to Toronto?) March 12 - interview at 10 am in US embassy at Simcoe st then after that I will be heading(via bus) to Ottawa and spend the night there. ( is there any bus company that you could recommend bound to Ottawa) March 13- In the morning , visit parliament building or any place. Then past 12 nn I will be heading (Via bus) to Montreal and will spend the night there. (Is there any bus going to Montreal from Ottawa?) March 14 - i will be exploring Montreal ( i haven't researched the must see places there yet) march 15 - still in Montreal maybe wandering in the morning coz in the afternoon going back to Winnipeg. Do you think it's possible. This is just a plan and I need feedback about it. I don't mind about the tight Itinerary. I am used to it. Thank you very much.
Hello! For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to drive to Brooklyn. I'm not sure why this seemed reasonable at the time. I've driven to many places before, but do not know the many highways, tunnels, etc around NYC...and now that I see there are dozens of 'steps' in googlemap, know that I will get lost. And I do *not* want to get lost in the middle of a city-scape maze that I can't get out of. Oh...and I don't have a GPS. I'm looking for the best route from Toronto to Brooklyn (Eastern Parkway). I know the shortest route seems to go through Chinatown, but I can't imagine what the traffic would be like. I *can* imagine me holding onto the wheel with the grip of death, getting lost, and leaving my car at the side of the road as I jump on the 4/5/6. Would any of you have taken this route before? Do you have suggestions for the best route taking into consideration directionally challenged people, as well as knowing the most logical routes (i.e. going through lower Manhattan is probably not a great idea). Your feedback is MOST welcome! Thank you

Hello to everyone! Two newly finished students from scotland here, hoping to take a gap year out to Toronto to both work and play! Looking for help and advice on any of the following matters; Where would be a good area to stay? (Hoping for fairly cheap, central location, if possible close to the university) What is the best way to get around toronto cheaply? Bus, subway, taxi etc. Roughly how expensive would a basic grocery shopping cost for two of us? What are the chances of us picking up jobs (not too fussed what type, barwork, waitering etc would suit fine) in order to pay for the cost of general living? Any help on the above topics would be much appreciated. Thanks. Paddy and Andrew.
The wife and I are going to Toronto for our 1 yr wedding anniv and then driving or taking a boat to Niagara Falls. Short stay, arriving Friday around 1pm, leaving Monday morning. We are 30 somethings, so we enjoy a good time and can get around easy. Not museum people , enjoy shopping, and attractions. Suggestions on things to do/see in Toronto? What is the best and cheapest way to get to Niagara Falls? I heard car rental is not the way to go, maybe boat tour. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks, Scott
Hi Everyone! I am a full time student at the University of Waterloo and am needing to travel from Toronto to Vancouver at the end of August. As a student, money is really tight and would really appreciate some advice on cheap flights out there. I am only there for a week, and therefore I think that flying is my only option. I was wondering if there are any Canadian airlines that offer student airfare, or that are having a promotion on cheap flights out west. Thanks so much for your help everyone!! :)

Hi all, I'm coming to toronto to study for the fall semester this year and the only thing that seems to be an issue is the housing. I have just received a phone call telling me that they place I wanted, the primrose, only has 8 month contracts left (I need a 4 month one) and that I can and should be able to find someone in January to take over my contract. So my question is, is there anywhere else in Toronto that provides student accommodation on a four month contract or is it easy to rent a place for 4 months in the city? Or even better, does anyone know if there is a very healthy market for students wanting accommodation in January and that it would be ok to trust him? Thanks so much in advance and apologies if this is not a vt question.
