Canada Rail

How much ahead of time do you need to buy the Canadian rail tickets from Toronto to Montreal (will 24 hours do)? Is it cheaper to buy these online than at the station? Are there any discounts from AAA or for Seniors? Looking at the website, it looks like food can be purchased. Are there any restrictions as to what food or things can be brought on board? I am going to buy the cheapest grade ticket. Is seating assigned? Is it like flying where there are days of the week that are cheaper to travel on? Are there any tips from those who use the rail frequently? Thanks for any insight.I have only traveled on rail once before but never in Canada.

Check out the Via Rail website. Advance tickets (bought on the internet) at least a week in advance are the least expensive. Waiting to the last day means full fare (there is a 60+ discount). The least expensive tickets don't have any additional discounts, i.e. cheaper than seniors fares, but no additional seniors discount. Seating is not always assigned on the cheapest tickts until you get to the train station (you basically have to trade in the ticket you bought online for a paper ticket to get on the train, and seat assignment might not happen until then). I'm not sure about the discount structure any more, but there were heavy travel periods where cheap seats were not available or available in limited quantities. My daughter studied in Toronto and frequently took the train home, but she graduated last year, so I'm not sure of the newest fare offerings any more. Check the website: http://www.viarail.ca/en This should give you more details

Thanks, I did visit the website, but I was looking for some local input. One week ahead sounds about right, but I was hoping for 2-3 days head so that I wouldn't have to plan my schedule so strictly. We're not sure how many days we would want to stay in each city.

I recall the price went up the next day when I was looking at going to Jasper from Edmonton last year - there was a 3 day advance booking required for the cheapest fare, I recall! I don't think there is any restriction on food that can be brought aboard though I'm not sure what the rules are on alcohol. I didn't have a seat reserved but others did esp families travelling together, for whom the seats facing each other were reserved..
