SIM Card or Wifi card companies

by sdcatraveler Online Now May 13, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Hello VT-ers. What are some companies that allow you to buy a sim card and swap it on your unlocked GSM phones in the Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City area? How much would I expect to pay? May decide to use my US phone instead if it's super costly. Thanks for your replies.

Who is your carrier? Several US companies are available in both the US and Canada so you wouldn't need a new SIM. Our daughter's phone worked in both countries. You need to check with your carrier and also check to see if there are roaming charges and how much they cost. If yours won't work, check T-Mobile and Verizon. Verizon has a lot of great plans for travel.

My carrier is Tmobile. Yes, I already know that it will "work" in Canada, but I am looking for a less expensive option. I have already gone on line and it is .59 cents a minute. I was wondering if there were some inexpensive pre-paid canadian carriers that I wasn't aware of. When you travel to Vietnam, etc. you can buy a sim that has preloaded minutes and it works out to be much cheaper. Hence, my question.

I think only Rogers & Fido (& Chatr, I guess, since it's owned by Rogers) run on GSM and HSPA. The other Canadian wireless networks like Bell, Telus, Virgin Mobile run on HSPA and other frequencies, so you'll need to have a phone that runs on the correct HSPA frequencies to work. The new ones, Mobilicity, Public, and Wind run on a different HSPA frequency that basically won't work on many popular phones. Most of them now have prepaid plans where you can get a SIM card but it depends on what type of phone you have. Also, if you are getting a SIM card to go with a prepaid plan, they might make you sign up for a minimum prepaid amount. Do you plan to use your phone a lot? Canadian wireless plans are not usually that great, so it might be easier getting an old fashioned phone card to make your calls for5 from the convenience store.
