First time in Toronto

by lkondrat Online Now Feb 8, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Hi all! My husband and I will be visiting Toronto for 2 days/3 nights In late July and only know we want to go to Niagara Falls one of the days. Toronto has sooooo much to offer that I can't even begin figuring out where to stay or what to do on our other day. We like B&Bs (as long as they have a bathroom in our room) and hotels that don't cost an arm and a leg (I'm an Accountant). We aren't really into a lot of outdoorsy kind of things and I can only handle so much museum gazing. But we love an adventure and seeing new and exciting places. We live in San Diego, CA, and I grew up on Maui so we won't go to any beaches. What kind of tomfoolery can you come up with for us????

For starters, try the official tourism sites. Most people visit the CN Tower (you can try the new edge walk if you're into thrills). http://www.seetorontonow.com/ There are usually a bunch of festivals near the end of July, like the Beaches jazz festival and Caribana, so you can see if your visit coincides with one of those. You can also check out these Discovery Walk brochures (especially the Downtown one). It might give you an idea of what there is to see in a short period of time. Sounds like you'll just have 1 full day here. toronto.ca/parks/trails/disc... I really like exploring the different neighbourhoods in town. Here's a brief description of them. You can also check out this website to see what's going on in town. http://www.blogto.com/neighbourhoods/ If you're into theatre or even opera, you should check out these sites: www.mirvish.com www.sonycentre.ca coc.ca/aboutthecoc/fourseaso... Not sure there are many sporting events around that time other than baseball. You should be able to get reasonably priced tickets for a Jays game if they are playing. Can you tell us your budget for hotel / B&B? Maybe some examples of what you consider an adventure? That can help us narrow down the suggestions. Or at least, we can come up with some areas you can look at. You may be able to get some deals if you look at Travelzoo.com/ca/ then local deals and Toronto, but it's a bit early for summer deals.

How about this - http://www.edgewalkcntower.ca/ It is new and I'm sure it's exciting. It is outdoorsy though.

Seeing Niagara Falls takes all day from Toronto, so you really have one day in the city with some extra nights. There are touristy things to do there, like the CN Tower, the shoe museum, and the hockey hall of fame, but it's a great urban experience in itself. I've always had a great time just walking around and exploring. The neighborhoods change relatively quickly, so it's easy to see a lot without walking too far. But to reach the neighborhoods a little further out (like The Danforth, which is a great area), the transit is really easy to figure out. If you come during Caribana and stay in the city, then you're going to be paying an arm and a leg. It's a fun festival, but it's also a huge festival so, if you're just there to see the city, I would work hard to avoid coming that weekend.

If you are renting a car, take the wine route and stop by at one of the many wineries in the Niagara Region. Also stop by at Niagara-on-the-lake, it is a nice small village. The drive along Niagara Parkway is also beautiful.

Niagara Falls driving .. leave the highway and head to Niagara-on-the-Lake, then take the above-mentioned Niagara Parkway (from NotL) along the river and near to some of the wineries into Niagara Falls itself. This approach is much more scenic and a good build-up to the falls themselves. Taking the highway right into NF is not that scenic and is busy with commercial traffic heading to the cross-border bridges. Niagara itself (apart from the falls are/parkway) is not a particularly scenic town. The Niagara Parkway route has some great views.

Toronto is Amazing. I Was there last year for the first time in Late July , I got some great tips and info from this site... Thanks everyone.. we booked into a Guesthouse which looked nice, but wasnt great on arrival.. was advised to look elsewhere but thought it would be fine.. we stayed one night and moved to a hotel. We were much happier then , and had a great time. The hotel was " The Primrose hotel part of the Great western hotel on 111 carlton street. I found it very nice, we had a great room on 16th floor and it wasnt pricey at all. You dont have much time and unforunately theres only so much you can do in one day. The citypasses are great but only if you have at least 4 days. Niagara Falls is beautiful we got a deal where you can do all the attractions there "such as Journey behind the falls" for 50dollars .I Realy recommend it. When in Toronto You should do the tour of CN Tower , also get a ferry or one of the boat trips at 8 or 9pm and enjoy the views of Torontos skyline from dusk to dark, its beautiful. The Toronto islands are lovely for relaxing or renting bikes, boats and exploring. Around that time the beaches Jazz festival and Carribana (spelt that wrong I think) is on , very enjoyable, great atmosphere around.

Welcome! Knowing that you're coming only for a couple of days...I might echo what another reviewer said about the time factor. Going to Niagara is going to take the entire day. You can get a bus down there...go to the falls, and back. Or rent a car, drive to the falls, drive through the vineyards on the way there/back. Although if you're in SD - and in California, you might want to skip this! :-) For hotels, my friends have gotten amazing bookings for 4-5 star hotels through priceline - you might want to try that. Start looking closer to May...and put your rate down, and you'll get an email every time someone's able to book at that. I would try to book between 70-90$. So much to do in Toronto,it really depends on your interests. Feel free to email me and I'll get back to you :-) M.
