Milwaukee to Toronto (ONT) Using the Ferry System

by Seabiscuit Online Now May 9, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Low and high, high and low, I have looked everywhere. Has anyone done the Milwaukee, WI to Toronto, ONT trip using the ferry system across Lakes Michigan and Huron (God, I hope that's the right lake). I'm trying to find a way to avoid a nasty trip just on the US highway system going to Connecticut. Toronto to Connecticut is a scant 9 hour drive, whereas, Rochester, MN to CT is around 20 hrs. We will be taking a car (obviously) so portage with that item is mandatory. We'll be heading out May 20. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. A gagillion thanks to anyone that can help. Jeff-

You can take a ferry across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee to Muskegon (lake-express.com/schedule/in..., then drive due east on I-96 and I-69 to Port Huron, where you pick up Canadian Rtes 402 and then 403 to Niagara Falls/Buffalo, then again due east across NY state on I-90. That's basically a straight shot from west to east to get very close to Connecticut. I'm not sure the ferry would actually save you that much time (if any) vs. driving around the southern end of Lake Michigan, if you're going all the way from Minnesota. There's no need to go across Lake Huron in any case.

Julie- That's what I figured. I guess taking the US freeway system is the best (albeit EXPENSIVE) way to go. Gas/petrol whatever, is more than likely going over3.75/gal before we leave. I was simply looking for alternatives.

Ah, the gas price. I paid3.82 two days ago--my first50 fill-up, ugh. It's just going to get worse and we'll all have to adjust and get used to paying more or driving less. This is why I am glad to have so many frequent flyer miles sometimes!

Yep. I was looking for a more 'efficient' and less costly way to go. Apparently, this venue isn't it. I guess I'm somewhat 'damned' to the US highway system. That's okay. 2 Friends are coming up from Bermuda to assist in the drive. I'll curl up in the trunk to sleep, and ignore the whole thing. (That is, until it's my turn to drive). Great fun!
