A lot of activities in th Travel Forum are about the Tongariro Crossing, but it is also possible to make other walks. One of them (which we did) is described in my New Zealand tip: members.virtualtourist.com/v... If travelling by car you also could consider to find accommodation in Ohakune, rather close to the park. happy travels Jaap

Yes, it is all about the Tongariro Crossing Trek and the incredible colours of the volcanoes of this central plateau - which BTW is still active. For accommodation I would always look at Whakapapa Village (where the already suggested Chateau is) as it is located right at the foot of Mt. Ruapehu, and already the drive up there, one volcano on the left-hand side of the road, the other on the right side, is unforgettable. The Skotel has all kinds of accommodation, from superior hotel room to backpacker. I loved the wooden chalets. In winter the national park is one of the two skiing centres of the North Island (the second one is Mt. Taranaki/Egmont). They also have some outdoor pursuit centres where you can do many activities the world does not really need. At the moment the whole country is still shocked about the death of a school teacher and six pupils some weeks ago when canyoning in bad weather conditions in the Tongariro N.P. (Mangatepopo Stream). They offer white-water rafting, abseiling etc. from the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre. There are also other providers though.
