      Route Advice

      Vietnam Aug 26, 2015 at 7:22 AM

Hello, I'm planning on coming to Vietnam for two weeks at the end of October. The basic plan is to purchase a motorcycle in HCMC and ride to Hanoi. I'm hoping someone has done a similar trip and has some advice about which route to take and what are the "must see's" along the way. I would like to see as much of the country as possible in my two weeks.

      Thank you in advance.

      border crossing to china

      Vietnam Aug 15, 2015 at 10:40 PM

Hi there,i will have a lot of time to spare while in Vietnam,i will mainly be stationed up north while maybe flying down to Saigon for a couple of days.
My question is,from Hanoi i would like to cross the border in to China,i have read there is a 12 hour train journey which stops in Nanning. But was wandering is it possible to catch a boat in to china,i will need to come back in to Hanoi for my Departing flight,so i will catch the train back for that. Does not really matter how long the boat will take,as i have 3 weeks before my departure out of Hanoi to KL. Also is Nanning interesting??much to do??
      Many thanks

We’ve never been in Vietnam before and we don’t know how much money we need for a 7-day-trip. We also want to make an adventure to the north. I heard prices in Vietnam are quite cheap. So can you give me some example about prices of hotel, restaurant or spa?

      Vietnam Aug 25, 2015 at 5:13 PM

We are at the starting line with regard to planning our trip. Ideally, we'd like to have a well paced, comprehensive trip to Vietnam, Cambodia/Angkor Wat, and maybe Luang Prabang/Laos. January or February would be ideal for us. We prefer to avoid the days around Tet after reading all the warnings on this site.
Does anyone have a sense of where guided tours are essential, and what is doable on our own as English-only speakers? Should we start with a local US travel agent or tour operator in Vietnam, or plan the whole trip through web sites?

I was hoping to catch the new Express bus as it passes by Lao Cai on the way from Sapa to Hanoi. Through email, the company has told me that they can pick me up at the highway round-about(!), but due to the language barrier, they have not been able to tell me if the bus automatically stops here. I am nervous that the bus will go flying past me and leave me stranded there for the night. I would appreciate it if someone who has taken this bus can assure me that they do indeed make an automatic stop at the Lao Cai round-about. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Can anyone recommend to me how I should arrange my trip to Sapa?

As I will arrive in Hanoi on the 20th of Feb, I was planning to take the overnight train to Sapa and be there till the 23rd before taking the train back, a total of 3D2N spent in Sapa.

      • I know I will be able to book the train tickets online but what about the bus from Lao Cai to Sapa? I have heard many commented that they booked through either an agency or the hotel, because I'm pretty sure I will get ripped off if I were to book it at the train station itself.
      • Since I will be there for 3D2N, are there 2 nights homestay or should I do just a 1N homestay and 1N hotel before heading back to hanoi?

    • Sapa- Bac Ha and back - how could I make this day most enjoyable?

Bac Ha Jan 22, 2014 at 4:19 PM

I am planning to go on a 3-day (2 nighs) Sapa-region tour ending up in Bac Ha market on a Sunday. My problem is that the tour company whose services I may buy for this 3-day trip, 185 dollars) seems to offer only and exclusively a bus transfer from Sapa to Bac Ha leaving me there ( which is allright) and then back to the Lao Chi railway station. The idea of getting there by a non-tourist bus ( more than 3 hours) visiting the market, maybe another three hours ( if the bus schedule lets me do so) and driving back directly to the railway station only to spend another 2-3 hours waiting at the station for the Hanoi-bound night train is not attractive enough. I guess I rather prefer to buy a compact one-day tour from Sapa to Bac Ha with another company that leaves earlier in the morning for the market and offers some activities for the afternoon after the market visit. Possibly a small group tour , as I do not feel rich enough to pay for a one person private tour. any suggestions, please??? Or maybe any suggestions for a RELIABLE , completely different tour company who could where I could buy a complete 3-day package tour including the market? Thanks a lot. anna

If you read the government websites, and visit your "travel health specialist" you get the idea that horrible diseases and risks are everywhere! We both got our Hep A and TDP and are up to date on the regular vaccines, but Typhoid/JE/ maleria??? How many (relatively careful) tourists
actually suffer from these sicknesses after a week or 2 in Sapa- or 3 1/2 weeks (in our case) in the country, sticking mainly to the beach and large towns, cities ? I am also wondering about train travel down the coast in November- is that safe? Thank you- ( i want to say that before i started traveling with a kid- these kinds of things never crossed my mind- parenthood has made me more careful- maybe they should call it par(anoid)enthood!!!!

    • A long shot - lost/stolen camera

      Sapa Apr 22, 2011 at 11:05 PM

      Hey...

I know this is a longshot but I stupidly left my camera in one of the bar/shops on the ascent from Cat Cat to Sapa (literally one of the last shops before you reach the first hotels at the bottom of Sapa}.

It was a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 (or maybe TZ8 - I forget!}. I returned to the bar 40 minutes later and as expected the camera had gone. The owner asked some of the kids who frequent the place whether they had seen it - one of the children couldn't look me in the eye when this was being explained and I am certain one of the kids there knows its whereabouts.

Anyway if any of you kind souls are offered a panasonic camera that still has pictures on it (I am wearing a white t-shirt with "scottish widows" written on the front, my girlfriend a plain white t-shirt}, please take the camera and I will refund your costs and some!

I have about 7 weeks worth of pictures on there, only backed up half. I am obviously devastated to lose the pictures ( I really dont care about the camera, I would gladly take just the memory card back} and don't hold much hope of seeing them again but thought I should try every avenue to retrieve them.

Finally, remember to double check you have everything before you leave an establishment or suffer like me!

      Thanks,

      Shaun

Any insights this forum can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks.
