So I'm looking for advice on whether we can wait until we get to Hanoi to worry about it (we have two full free days there), and what we should expect to pay. We are not high-end travelers. Thanks.

I searched for english speaking tour guides online and in touch with 2-3 guides who will give me customized packages (excluding airfare + hotel accommodation). I am surprised to know that they are charging 300 USD - 700 USD/person. Does it really cost so much for personal guides?
Can you tell me what are other alternatives for guided tours. Do we get in Hanoi itself? Anyone can give some contact point. Thanks.

    • Sapa- Bac Ha and back - how could I make this day most enjoyable?

Bac Ha Jan 22, 2014 at 4:19 PM

I am planning to go on a 3-day (2 nighs) Sapa-region tour ending up in Bac Ha market on a Sunday. My problem is that the tour company whose services I may buy for this 3-day trip, 185 dollars) seems to offer only and exclusively a bus transfer from Sapa to Bac Ha leaving me there ( which is allright) and then back to the Lao Chi railway station. The idea of getting there by a non-tourist bus ( more than 3 hours) visiting the market, maybe another three hours ( if the bus schedule lets me do so) and driving back directly to the railway station only to spend another 2-3 hours waiting at the station for the Hanoi-bound night train is not attractive enough. I guess I rather prefer to buy a compact one-day tour from Sapa to Bac Ha with another company that leaves earlier in the morning for the market and offers some activities for the afternoon after the market visit. Possibly a small group tour , as I do not feel rich enough to pay for a one person private tour. any suggestions, please??? Or maybe any suggestions for a RELIABLE , completely different tour company who could where I could buy a complete 3-day package tour including the market? Thanks a lot. anna

Hi- I will be traveling by train to sapa with my 10 year old daughter in Novemeber, from Hanoi. If you read the government websites, and visit your "travel health specialist" you get the idea that horrible diseases and risks are everywhere! We both got our Hep A and TDP and are up to date on the regular vaccines, but Typhoid/JE/ maleria??? How many (relatively careful) tourists
actually suffer from these sicknesses after a week or 2 in Sapa- or 3 1/2 weeks (in our case) in the country, sticking mainly to the beach and large towns, cities ? I am also wondering about train travel down the coast in November- is that safe? Thank you- ( i want to say that before i started traveling with a kid- these kinds of things never crossed my mind- parenthood has made me more careful- maybe they should call it par(anoid)enthood!!!!

    • A long shot - lost/stolen camera

      Sapa Apr 22, 2011 at 11:05 PM

      Hey...

I know this is a longshot but I stupidly left my camera in one of the bar/shops on the ascent from Cat Cat to Sapa (literally one of the last shops before you reach the first hotels at the bottom of Sapa}.

It was a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 (or maybe TZ8 - I forget!}. I returned to the bar 40 minutes later and as expected the camera had gone. The owner asked some of the kids who frequent the place whether they had seen it - one of the children couldn't look me in the eye when this was being explained and I am certain one of the kids there knows its whereabouts.

Anyway if any of you kind souls are offered a panasonic camera that still has pictures on it (I am wearing a white t-shirt with "scottish widows" written on the front, my girlfriend a plain white t-shirt}, please take the camera and I will refund your costs and some!

I have about 7 weeks worth of pictures on there, only backed up half. I am obviously devastated to lose the pictures ( I really dont care about the camera, I would gladly take just the memory card back} and don't hold much hope of seeing them again but thought I should try every avenue to retrieve them.

Finally, remember to double check you have everything before you leave an establishment or suffer like me!

      Thanks,

      Shaun

      Sapa Jun 10, 2010 at 10:20 AM

I was wondering if I should be booking a homestay in Sapa prior to getting there, or it'll be easy to find a tour agency to book once I'm there?

Also, what's the recommended no. days of stay in Sapa?

      Thanks in advance!

    • What is best weekend tour package to Sapa

Sa Pa Feb 13, 2010 at 2:01 AM

We are 4 people that want a weekend trip to Sapa from Hanoi. We would like to see markets, ethnic villages and scenery, but some of us cannot manage uphill trekking or too long walking (about 45 minutes is OK, if not difficult). We would like to arrange it in advance over the internet. Which tour operator and which tour would people recommend - there seem to be so many!!

      Thanks,

      lin

    • Sapa and surrounds for two older ladies in March 2010

      Sapa Jan 27, 2010 at 4:54 AM

Can someone tell me specifically where to find a tour guide once one has arrived in Sapa from the Railway Station and if the treks are very far. We would like to see some of the villages and market and will do a 2day 3 night trip from Hanoi. I would like to book the train and the accommodation myself and then see if we can get a guide in Sapa. It would be a Wednesday/Thursday and I understand there are markets at Cao Son (wednesday) and Lung Khau Nhin (Thursday), is it possible to do those two villages from Sapa without too much trouble?

    • visiting Sa Pa

Sa Pa Jan 15, 2010 at 12:03 AM

I think that we missed a lot in Sa Pa. What all do most people see? Our guide never showed us the water fall at one of the hill tribes. A local girl offered to show it to us but I didn't know how much time we had.
      We plan on going back.

Lao Cai Jan 13, 2010 at 10:57 AM

Hi we will be going back to Vietnam again this year and I'm starting my research.
Has anyone crossed the border at Lao Cai to China. What is there to do and see around there. I heard that it's a great place to shop but I have no clue what I would buy.

      Sapa Oct 3, 2009 at 1:51 AM

I'm planning a trip to Sapa during the Tet Holiday period (14th to 17th Feb 2010), is it advisable as it's a holiday season? Are the markets in Sapa open during this time of the year?

Would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

    • Is it worth goiong to Sapa for one day?

Sa Pa Oct 2, 2009 at 5:19 PM

We are thinking of going to Sapa on the overnight train, spending the day, probably a Saturday and then back on the overnight train. Could we plan a motorbike tour on the spot or should we organise it beforehand? ..or just spend the day at the markets?

    • Travel to Sapa

      Sapa Sep 12, 2009 at 11:22 AM

In February 2010, I'm planning a trip to Vietnam and am considering a side trip (2 days r/t) to Sapa. I've read about it and it sounds intriguing and not at all a glitzy tourist trap. However, I'm a "mature" (60's) female traveler with mild back problems. Can probably trek 2 miles w/o a problem. My travel buddy thinks it's too far and perhaps too difficult. Any insights this forum can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Lao Cai - Bac Ha - Sapa

      Sapa Sep 9, 2009 at 12:04 AM

      Hello
I ll go to Vietnam soon, and I am planning to go to the north for a few days.
I'd like to ask you what you think about my potential plan.

I ll arrive by the night train from Hanoi in the morning, and find a GH in Lao Cai.
After a short rest, I would like to go and see Bac Ha during the day.
Do you think it worth it to go to Bac Ha, and also is it possible in a day?
I m not sure, I ve been very clear on that one, haha.

Sleep in Lao Cai, and next morning, catch the bus to Sapa: spend a day there relaxing, and next day, go trekking, and sleep in Sapa.
Next day, go back to Hanoi by the day train to enjoy the landscape.

I m really grateful to those who will answer that post.
I have 18 days holiday with a tight budget (I live in Thailand) so I am trying to plan something great....

      Have a great day everyone!!

    • Which train is better.....Et Pumpkin vs Livitrans

      Sapa Mar 11, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Anyone recently on either of these train? Appreciate feedback on which train is better in terms of cabin comfort? Which is newer? From the pictures of the trains, Livitrans seems to be a better choice but I rather hear from her passengers....... Price wise, Livitrans 4-berth sleeper is 10USD lesser compared to the Et-Pumpkin. Thanks in advance.
