Hi im staying in thailand this summer and am wondering if it would be cheaper to book hotels when i get there, are the walk in rates cheaper than online? does anyone have any recommendations?
Depends on the type of hotels you wish to stay in. The higher end hotels (3-5 stars) are not walk in favorable. However you can book less expensive hotels by just walking in. Or try Agoda.com for lower priced hotels.

I would just walk in and maybe you try and get a discount as summer is the off-season, not so many tourists and rainy days. There are plenty of hotels throughout the country.

You can ask for hotel recommendations so you don't start from scratch. If you ask for hotel help also say how much you want to pay for a room per night. That way you will have a hotel to head for right away in your price range. IF you arrive really late at night it is a good idea to have at least the first night booked. Once you are in Bangkok you can also call places and ask for them to hold a room for you. Longer stays often come with discounts. "staying in thailand this summer...." Make sure you have your visas sorted out! You can't stay as long as you want without proper documentation.

it depends on the hotel...some hotels provide offers on low rates online. but if they have empty suites then they can give you a cheap spot offer...

Just get a Lets Go and a Rough guide and pick your price range.

JimJim. Have you worked up a budget yet so you know how much you can afford for a hotel room? Once you know how much you have for hotel rooms ask for suggestions in your price range. Really cheap hotels may not have fancy websites. Some places you check out in person and see if the place is acceptable to you. Once the hotel knows you they may take a reservation with a simple email request.

I am always surprised that hotels often have high walk-in prices and low prices through agencies. They have agreements in many cases, that prevent them from competing with the big agencies. I have walked into a hotel and been given a high price. I tell them I can get it much cheaper online, and they would not have to pay a commission if they just gave me the price I can get through an agency. They often refuse. In one case, I checked the price at a Ramada in Bangkok and was given a bad price. I walked down the street and got a good price at an agency. I walked back and checked in and let them know what my cost was. They just shrugged and said they could not do better on price. It is best to look online first at Agoda, or Asia rooms or any other agency. Know the price before you walk-in. You may find it is best just to make the booking online so you don't have to spend valuable travel time walking around in SE Asian heat looking for a room.

"Also flying back to BKK airport at the end of the trip to spend a few days in Bangkok is it expensive to get a taxi from the airport to bangkok and is it worth four days out of my trip? Thanks :) :) * There are many posts on using taxis from the airport. Roughly from 320 baht to 390 baht for the taxi ride. This includes toll charges (paid during the ride) a mandatory 50 baht surcharge and the meter fare to your hotel. The price is the same for one passenger or four. Have small bills and even coins when using the meter taxi in the city. Taxi sign up desk is located on first floor in 2 locations, outside at the curb area. Link below for airport Public Taxi desk. In the city DO NOT get into a meter taxi unless the driver agrees to use the meter. Don't expect a driver to cash big bills like a 500 baht note. Wave a moving taxi over in the city then tell him to use the meter. Many parked taxis want you to bargain the cost and they make more that way. Tuk-tuks cost more for tourists than using a meter taxi (using the meter) to get around. bangkokairportonline.com/nod... From the airport there is excellent rail service available between 0600 and midnight. From the airport to the Pratunam area is 45 baht using the City Line. You can connect to the Skytrain at Phaya Thai and go to more areas of Bangkok. There are hotels you can walk to from this rail service. Also, rail service connects with the subway. (Subway connects with the Hualamphong Train Sation.) Is visiting Bangkok worth it? Well some tourists think going to the island areas is a waste of time and costs too much! Up to you! Bangkok should be cheaper than many beach areas especially when you consider local transportation. When you go back home your friends and relatives will ask you how was Bangkok - rarely will they ask how was some little dinky island area down south. Even in Bangkok you will have summer like weather all year long! No Rail service in the Khao San Road area. Rail service in Bangkok. urbanrail.net/as/bang/bangko... Good luck.
