3 week itinerary please!!!

by Sian8dan Online Now Mar 25, 2012 at 1:18 PM

Hi! Me and my partner are going to Thailand for 3 weeks! We want to start in the north and do some cultural sightseeing and trips etc for 1 week ish, then move south to explore the islands etc for some much needed relaxation before heading back to Bangkok to fly back to uk. Unfortunately we know nothing about the Thailand, and don't want to rush our trip, does anyone have any ideas for us?

Thanks

If you want to go north for cultural sightseeing there is no better place than Sukhothai, one of the previous capitals which is 6 hrs or so north of Bangkok. The ruins of the old city are 5 or 6kms from the new city and transport leaves every few minutes. Another idea is to go directly from the airport to Ayutthaya (another former capital with many ruins) which is just an hour or so north of Bangkok, the guest houses are mainly in the centre and the ruins are within walking distance but better to see them on a bicycle. After Sukhothai you can head for Chiang Mai, the inner city is surrounded by a moat and ancient walls( only part of them still exist). The city is big now so the temples and old ruins are scattered between modern structures. You can take a trip to Doi Suthep, a mountainous area just outside Chiang Mai where you can see stunning architecture on the temple and a wonderful view of the surrounding area. You might want an exciting day out at "the flight of the Gibbons(ziplining in the jungle), we did this last year and enjoyed it.There office is just outside Tha Pae gate but you can book thru many agents. Perhaps it is best to search for a cheap flight north to Chiang Mai and start there and work your way south. (or take the train to centre of Bangkok and get an overnight sleeper to Chiang Mai from Hualamphong Station). It is a long time since i visited the islands as i live on a beautiful island with great beaches so when i travel in s e asia i am looking for hilly areas, so best someone else advise you on that one.

For island vacation, you have 3 options: nearest Bangkok without flying would be Pattaya, Koh Samet and further closer to Cambodian border are Koh Chang and Koh Kood. Second, is to go southwest of Thailand to Phuket or Krabi for the Phi Phi islands, Thirdly, is to go southeast of Thailand to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao.

Well ko Lipe is nice too, but it depends what you are looking for, quiet beaches or place with wild parties and considerable drinking!the island is small and you can walk around it in an hour. There are simple bungalows and up-market a/c ones, diving is available. I once spent an enjoyable week on a neighbouring island, Ko Bulon Lae but the beach wasn't up to much. I also enjoy ko Lanta..

Beaches in Phuket are nice but too crowded and more commercialised nowadays. I cant denied that the places is good for party and entertainment but sometimes i just need a more quiet place. Ao Nang in Krabi is great. I might either choose Koh Lipe or Ao Nang for my relaxing trip soon. Maybe if i could get cheap air ticket i might go to Davao or Boracay in jul/aug.

Hi, like David said, you've got many options for 'cultural' travel in the North. One my favourite place up there is Lampang, and though there are many sites to see around town and nice atmosphere, lot of foreign tourists give it a miss. And maybe it's good so :)
Something more different to see (still North of Bangkok): go to visit thousands of monkeys in centre of Lop Buri, they occupy even ancient Khmer temples sites. Crazy place, which I somewhat loved, though monkeys could attack - and their bites are not innocent.

I also saw only Koh Chang - thought it's great place to explore, we rented motorbike every day to travel all around island, walked mangrove path, beaches are sand with coconut and some with coral, some spots are noisier with loads of backpackers, other quieter. They had also elephant trekking and stuff. Loads of forest and rocks there, could be good place to stay if you like outdoors.

Anyways, so much to see that it's difficult to make a choice, especially if you're first time to Thailand.

Rather spent couple days in Bangkok for sight seeing and also to learn a bit about people, food and weather. Then check out the package tour the North of Thailand, by this way you learn more about country and culture. There are 5,6,7 days tour. Fly from the Noth after you finish the tour to The south, Phuket,Krabi or Samui for the beach. Then back to Bangkok for another couple night before go home. I am a tour guide, by my experience this the best program.
    Julie.
